Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Flood Risk Hydraulic Modeller / Hydrologist to join our flood risk and drainage team, based in either London, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol or Newcastle offices, with the opportunity to work flexibly from home in the future as needed to achieve best outcomes. The team undertakes a wide variety of major and challenging infrastructure projects across a range of private and public sectors.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the hydraulic modelling and hydrology assessment to support our design of flood risk schemes and flood risk assessment services.
• Work across a diverse range of clients delivering challenging projects for private and public sector.
• Lead projects from inception, determine methodology, hydrological calculation, hydraulic model build, quality assurance review, calibration, designing simulations and reporting in accordance with best practice.
• Work collaboratively at feasibility level on wider engineering projects and with senior management.
• Take individual responsibility for a range of project types, manage them independently, and be the client’s main point of contact.
• Instruct, supervise and mentor junior staff in the design and management of schemes; ensure delivery to time and cost, and help manage change.
• Contribute and develop proposals for future work.
• Travel UK-wide as needed, including occasional outside normal office hours.

Qualifications & Experience

• Degree-level education in a relevant field and chartered with CIWEM or equivalent.
• Experience in developing hydrological studies using UK methodologies (e.g., Flood Estimation Handbook).
• Experience modelling flooding sources using hydraulic modelling software (Flood Modeller, TuFLOW, ESTRY, InfoWorks ICM).
• Experience delivering flood modelling commissions to support flood risk projects and planning.
• Experience in technical reviews of hydraulic models and engaging with Local Authorities and Environment Agency.
• Experience in writing reports and presenting to internal and external partners.
• Knowledge of UK flood risk policy (NPPF, SPP, TAN15).
• Experience liaising with key stakeholders (clients, LLFA, EA, water companies) and discharge of planning conditions.
• Experience with IT systems (ArcGIS, AutoCAD, MS Office).
• Ability to mentor and develop junior staff; strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Full UK Driving Licence; security clearance to SC level preferable or willingness to apply.
• Commitment to health and safety practices in design and workplace.
