Principal Geotechnical Engineer RPS, a Tetra Tech company, is looking for a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to be based in Abingdon, Cardiff or London. Providing support to junior colleagues, reporting to senior staff, and focusing on project management and delivery of own projects. Engaged in a mix of projects ranging from due diligence to supporting planning applications and design works leading to and supporting construction. Originating and checking specifications and design of geotechnical elements and foundations. Geotechnical data assessment, analysis, design, risk assessments, modelling and reporting to EC7 and CD622. Checking the work of junior staff and input on Phase 1 geotechnical and geoenvironmental desk studies, Phase 2 ground investigation procurement, supervision, field logging and sampling, monitoring, factual and interpretative reporting. Undertaking geotechnical design calculations related to the preliminary design of foundations, slopes, retaining walls and earthworks. Undertaking coal mining risk assessments including development of investigative works and remediation or mitigation strategies. Supervising and monitoring earthworks or geotechnical related projects for infrastructure and land development projects; construction quality assurance monitoring and validation reporting in the waste or land development sector is an advantage. Planning and managing own project work to ensure client requirements and deadlines are met in accordance with the QA system. Responding to and dealing with technical queries on projects in a professional and timely manner. Taking accountability for own and others' contribution and delivery on projects and acting as a project manager responsible for all programme and financial aspects. Helping grow the business by strengthening relationships with existing clients and supporting expansion into new markets. Pursuing continuous professional development and maintaining a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
Who We Are Looking For
A geotechnical engineering professional with recognisable experience in the UK, thorough knowledge of geotechnical data assessment, analysis, design, risk assessments, modelling and reporting. Experience of geoenvironmental (contaminated land) investigation and assessment in addition to geotechnical skills is a distinct advantage as many projects are multi‑faceted. Working experience and understanding of EC7 geotechnical design including earthworks, foundations, settlement and slope stability analysis.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Good understanding of UK geology and geotechnical/soil mechanics principles. Practical experience of site investigation and laboratory techniques. Ability to work remotely, with demonstrable success in designing, planning and organising tasks. Proactive and methodical problem‑solving approach as an individual and team member with a desire to find solutions. Experience of geotechnical design of foundations, slope stability and earthworks, ideally with detailed experience of design software. Experience of site investigation techniques and soil and rock logging, factual and interpretive reporting. Computer literacy in MS Office suite, use of Holebase/Open Ground and other design software, and AutoCAD proficiency (advantageous). Enthusiastic team player willing to undertake site as well as office‑based work. Keenness to learn and expand experience. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to build strong working relationships with team, colleagues, clients and external bodies. Willingness to learn and develop understanding of financial and project management techniques relevant to the role. Commitment to build knowledge of the chosen technical discipline including current methods, legislation, techniques and guidance. Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload. Positive approach to professional development. Recommended: Chartered membership (ICE, GeolSoc or IoM3).
Qualifications
Ideally a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree as a minimum in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology, Civil Engineering with modules in Soil Mechanics or Geology and Maths. Ideally Chartered membership of the relevant professional body.
