Principal Highways Engineer (Liveable Places) Join the WSP in the UK & Ireland to work on sustainable transport and public realm improvement projects. This role focuses on design management, project delivery and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality, sustainable outcomes for London and other major cities. Key Responsibilities
Design Management: Oversee the design process, ensuring that all design work meets client and quality standards, is completed on time and within budget, and is coordinated with other departments. Project Management: Manage planning, scheduling, budgeting and resource allocation to deliver milestones on schedule. Client Liaison: Act as the main point of contact, keeping clients informed of progress and managing expectations. Risk Management: Identify and mitigate project risks, ensuring issues are resolved quickly. Quality Assurance: Maintain the highest design quality standards, resolving any issues promptly. Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the design team, fostering effectiveness and efficiency.
A Typical Week Would Include
Preparation of highways designs for construction projects and coordination with other disciplines. Design production: drawings, details, specifications, bill of quantities and design calculations. Attendance at client and internal progress meetings; maintaining action trackers. Liaison with discipline leads and updating scheme programmes. Implementing QA/QM procedures, completing Project Execution Plans. Maintaining project commercial risk registers. Preparation of design H&S risk management plans and schedules. Coordinating inputs from technical disciplines and distributing project information. Coordinating technical decision logs. Overseeing fee proposals and change control documents. Task assignment documentation and internal approvals. Financial reporting processes, forecasting. Preparation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements for site surveys. Updating project plans and document control using SharePoint. Planning and delivery of project deliverables and milestones. Raising orders for supply chain partners’ support.
What We Will Be Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. Experience in design management and project management. Holder of a relevant professional qualification (IENG, CENg) or nearing qualification. Strong leadership and team management skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to report to senior level. Proven track record of leading design projects from inception to completion. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
