Overview
Principal Highways Engineer (Liveable Places) role at WSP in the UK & Ireland, London (Chancery Lane).
We are seeking a Principal engineer with a strong background in design management and project management to lead design delivery and the implementation of sustainable transport and public realm improvement projects from inception to completion, primarily in London.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Management: Oversee the design process, lead the design team, coordinate with other departments, ensure design work is delivered to high standards, on time and within budget, and meets client requirements.
- Project Management: Manage overall project planning, scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, milestones, and project delivery within budget.
- Client Liaison: Act as main point of contact for clients and keep them informed of progress.
- Risk Management: Identify and manage project risks and resolve issues quickly and effectively.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure design work meets quality standards and resolve issues promptly.
- Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the design team to work effectively and efficiently.
Our services focus on innovative sustainable transport solutions, including business case preparation and design development for a range of projects, such as Major Public Realm Improvements in central London and cycling/active travel schemes.
What Your Typical Week Would Include
- Preparation of highway designs for construction projects and coordination with other disciplines.
- Creation of drawings, design details, specifications, bill of quantities and design calculations.
- Attendance at client and internal progress meetings and maintenance of action trackers.
- Liaison with discipline leads and updates to scheme programmes ensuring inter-dependencies and logic.
- Implementing QA/QM procedures, assisting with Project Execution Plans and related actions.
- Maintaining project commercial risk registers; supporting RAMS and site surveys as required.
- Coordinating inputs from technical disciplines and ensuring dissemination of project information across teams.
- Coordinating technical decision logs; overseeing fee proposals and change control documents.
- Preparing task assignments and internal approvals; supporting financial reporting and forecasting.
- Preparing RAMS for site surveys and participating in site visits; updating project plans and document control via SharePoint.
- Planning and delivering project milestones and deliverables; raising orders for supply chain partners’ technical support.
Supporting in management of Key Performance Indicators.
Qualifications and What We Will Be Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Experience in design management and project management.
- Holder of a relevant professional qualification (IEng or CEng) or close to obtaining a professional qualification.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and ability to report to senior level.
- Proven track record of leading design projects from inception to completion.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
