The Principal Database Administrator (PDBA) is the global strategic and technical lead on the design, build, management and maintenance of all IT and Manufacturing applications from a database perspective. They will drive the operational cybersecurity capabilities and roadmaps globally across IT regarding database hosting and usage and ensure alignment with established legal standards such as NIST 800-82, ISA/IEC62443, CIS-20, and ISO27001. They are accountable for system availability and performance, which may impact the entire FDB functions and productions.
This is a hybrid role located at our Billingham UK site.

Responsibilities
- Design: Be the technical and design lead for the day-to-day support and availability of all FDB Global databases, including build, configure, tune, administer, and support database technologies and solutions.
- Technical Oversight: Perform cross-functional, multidisciplinary technical oversight to include evaluation of project work, staff, methods, and associated procedures related to enterprise-level IT/OT database systems. Compile technology related documentation for GxP and critical IT database technologies. Participate in system validation and testing processes as required. Approve validation documentation together with relevant ITQ. Represent IT system in connection with audits and inspections.
- Leadership and Collaboration: Perform cross-functional, multidisciplinary technical oversight to include evaluation of project work, staff, methods, and associated procedures related to enterprise-level IT/OT database systems. Compile technology related documentation for GxP and critical IT database technologies. Participate in system validation and testing processes as required. Approve validation documentation together with relevant ITQ. Represent IT system in connection with audits and inspections.
- Integration: Lead the design and deployment of new database technologies ensuring that they integrate smoothly with existing systems and infrastructure. Ensure that all FDB policies and procedures are followed and that deployed systems meet the security frameworks in place. Define and meet AIS metrics prior to new system/service deployment.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science or Information Technology or relevant technical certifications
- 10+ years experience in a senior DBA position with proven track record in an enterprise IT infrastructure environment; or
- 6+ years’ experience in a biomedical IT service environment in a senior DBA role; or
- Any combination of education and experience providing an equivalent background to deliver against role expectations.
- In-depth experience of scripting and automation technologies
- Experience of tracking emerging IT issues, strategies, roadmaps, patterns, and technologies over time to assess opportunities to enhance service delivery.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong SQL expertise and solid understanding across several DBMS (MSSQL, Oracle, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and more), including performance tuning and backup/restore best practices.
- In-depth technical knowledge of DB Backup/Replication Technologies
- In-depth technical knowledge of DB tuning
- Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure)
- Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., SQL, PowerShell, Python) is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of Infrastructure DB security and frameworks such as ISO27001
- Solid business acumen and comfort engaging with senior leadership
- Adept at communicating with technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels
- Adept at gaining support from business and technical stakeholders for IT DB initiatives with medium/high levels of risk, impact, and complexity
