Principal Mechanical Engineer (Energy) – WSP, UK & Ireland

Overview

WSP is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join the Energy Transition Team. You will lead mechanical design work across a wide range of energy projects, from initial conception to decommissioning, including conventional power plants, energy‑from‑waste plants, industrial facilities and carbon capture schemes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop cost‑effective, efficient and innovative mechanical solutions for complex projects.
  • Work on projects at various maturity stages: Feasibility Studies, Concept Design, FEED, Value Engineering and Detailed Design.
  • Prepare mechanical deliverables: calculations, equipment specifications and datasheets for turbines, compressors, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers.
  • Collaborate closely with process engineers on PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Support plant layout development and 3D model creation.
  • Engage with equipment vendors on design packages and conduct technical evaluations of vendor designs.
  • Provide engineering advice on plant integrity issues for operational assets.
  • Contribute to multi‑disciplinary proposals and bids for the mechanical discipline.

Qualifications

  • A Degree in a relevant engineering subject.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards IEng/CEng and a member of a relevant engineering institute.
  • Post‑graduate work experience within power generation or oil & gas industry.
  • Knowledge of national and international codes and standards for plant equipment and piping.
  • Experience of pressure vessel and piping design and stress analysis.
  • Experience working with mechanical designers and pipe stress engineers on plant 3D models.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel for schedules and datasheets; experience with MathCAD for engineering calculations.
  • Experience of thermal plant operational and integrity issue troubleshooting and problem solving.

Location is flexible across our UK office network.
