Principal Design Engineer (Mechanical) – Location: Birmingham | Hybrid working available

We are seeking a Principal Design Engineer (Mechanical) to play a key role in delivering innovative water and wastewater solutions across the UK and Ireland. This is a client-facing position offering the chance to guide projects from concept to completion and support the development of the next generation of engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of junior engineers across multiple offices.
  • Drive the mechanical design of water projects, including:
    • wastewater treatment
    • clean water treatment
    • industrial wastewater solutions
    • biosolids treatment
  • Oversee design and project management from initial concept through to delivery.
  • Produce calculations, drawings, specifications, and detailed design reports.
  • Contribute to HAZID/HAZOP and LOPA studies.
  • Lead energy efficiency initiatives and balance-of-plant design.

About You

  • Degree (BEng/MEng) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 7+ years of relevant post-graduate design experience.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a relevant professional institution.
  • Proven background in the water industry.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Full clean driving licence and own transport.
