We have a number of exciting on-going projects with clients across both commercial & naval marine domains and are seeking to expand our existing Naval Architecture capability.

The Principal Naval Architect will be dynamic and responsive to changes in technology, innovation, and client requirements. You will have the opportunity to provide leadership for or get involved in concept surface & sub-surface vessel design, complex engineering design & analysis tasks, the creation of new & innovative tools & processes, the delivery of engineering consultancy services, and the development of decarbonisation solutions & other emerging technologies across a wide range of global maritime programmes.

We offer a hybrid work arrangement with primary work location in one of our UK office locations (Bristol) and occasional travel to client sites, dependent upon project.

Responsibilities

  • Lead capability development for Naval Architecture, resource planning & distribution, skills identification for complex task based bids and delivery needs.
  • Engineering management: plan and integrate the delivery of complex single and multidisciplinary tasks.
  • Apply & continue to develop a breadth of engineering skills in Naval Architecture and related disciplines where applicable.
  • Define & conduct engineering analyses, technical studies and R&D projects to deliver high quality solutions.
  • Deliver technical oversight & governance across a wide range of maritime engineering projects, ensuring compliance with defined standards, codes & business practices.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance & leadership to enable growth of the Naval Architecture capability.
  • Investigate and solve complex technical problems in concept, basic and detailed designs.
  • Develop and maintain written technical and administrative procedures, standards, processes, practices, guidelines, and standards.
  • Assist with maintenance and improvement of quality standards of engineering, design, and production information.
  • Interface directly with customers and clients to discuss engineering solutions to complex problems.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g., Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Technology, Marine Engineering) or equivalent experience in naval and commercial ship design, construction, or maintenance.
  • Professional member of a relevant engineering institution (RINA, IMarEST, IMechE).
  • Recognised as a Chartered Engineer by the UK Engineering Council (or ability to achieve within 6 months).

Desired Skills

  • Understanding of the Naval Architect role across all stages of the design lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of applying classification society rules, regulations, and standards in design, construction and in-service lifecycle phases.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years post-graduate experience (15 years for non-degree qualified) in either the commercial or naval maritime domain.
  • Experience in areas such as:
    • Hydrostatic, seakeeping & stability analysis
    • Propulsion, resistance, and powering requirements
    • Hydrodynamic & manoeuvring analysis
    • Marine structure design & analysis
  • Ship design including hull form, superstructure, arrangement & outfitting
  • Experience with Naval Architecture design & analysis software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MaxSurf, NAPA, Aveva, Paramarine, Orcaflex, Ansys Structural/Fluent, MatLab, MS Excel)
  • Experience of whole ship design including performance assessment, design integration, construction, through-life maintenance, and disposal
  • Experience leading multi-discipline teams with effective communication
  • Experience in a technical consulting environment, leading and/or supporting multiple engineering projects & customers

What Do I Need Before I Apply

  • The post will be based in an environment regulated by Trade Control legislation and involve working with controlled goods, technology and/or services.
  • Naval projects may be subject to initial security considerations (e.g., sole UK nationality and eligible for ‘Security Check’ (SC) or ‘Developed Vetting’ (DV) security clearance).
