Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis and evaluation of submarine platforms manoeuvring performance from concept design to in-service support.
  • Undertake development, verification and validation of mathematical manoeuvring model using physical model test data.
  • Generate Safe Manoeuvring Envelopes and supporting associated operator guidance.
  • Work with enterprise partners to develop the modelling capability, processes and toolsets for use to support major programmes.
  • Collaborate with naval architecture teams, systems teams, Active Vehicle Control system teams and propulsion engineers as well as customers and suppliers to deliver innovative and safe submarine solutions.
  • Support and conduct hydrodynamic sea trials such as depth and heading control, including test form development and post-trial data analysis.

Qualifications

  • Essential
  • Experience in the generation of ship or submarine manoeuvring modelling.
  • Advanced numeracy and analytical skills.
  • A strong understanding of hydrodynamic principles and methods.
  • Degree in Naval Architecture, Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent experience.
  • Desirable
  • Hydrodynamic/aerodynamic design and evaluation experience.
  • Physical testing experience.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards/ability to achieve.

About the team

The Vehicle Control team consists of experts within Naval Architecture and the Whole Boat Design Team, working on complex ship design and build programmes to deliver cutting-edge submarines. Relocation support packages are available across Submarines roles, subject to eligibility criteria.

Please note that many roles require security and export control clearances. Applicants may need Baseline Personnel Security Standard or higher levels of National Security Vetting, which may require 5 to 10 years of UK residency for the role.
