The Role:
As a Principal Transport Planner, you will lead transport planning for one or more districts in Hampshire. You’ll be responsible for drafting local and district-wide transport strategies and acting as client manager (sponsor) for a portfolio of transport schemes—typically over ten per year—ranging in value from £100k to £10m.
You’ll oversee the early development of schemes, including feasibility studies and optioneering, commissioning street designers and transport consultants as needed. Your work will span a wide variety of initiatives such as:
- Place-making and public realm improvements
- Active travel and bus priority schemes
- Healthy streets and micro-mobility projects
- Road safety, traffic management, and highway capacity enhancements
- Parking strategies and moving traffic enforcement
All projects will be delivered within the Local Transport Plan (LTP4) framework, with a strong focus on Road User Utility, Movement and Place, and Healthy Streets principles.
You’ll join the Area Strategy and Scheme Development team within Integrated Transport—a team of around 20 professionals working on approximately 100 studies and schemes annually, with a development budget of £5m and a total capital value exceeding £200m.
Note: There are three Principal Transport Planner positions available.
What you’ll do:
- Lead transport planning for one or more districts in Hampshire.
- Draft local and district-wide transport strategies.
- Act as client manager (sponsor) for over ten transport schemes annually, with values ranging from £100k to £10m.
- Oversee early scheme development, including feasibility studies and commissioning of street designers and transport consultants.
- Work within the Local Transport Plan (LTP4) framework, applying principles from Road User Utility, Movement and Place, and Healthy Streets.
- Be part of the Area Strategy and Scheme Development team (20 members), contributing to ~100 projects annually with a £5m budget and over £200m in capital value.
