Principal Transport Planner
London or Manchester, UK - other UK offices can be considered for the right candidate.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Transport Planner to lead and support development planning projects across a wide range of sectors. You will play a key role in delivering transport inputs for planning applications, providing expert advice to clients, and influencing sustainable development proposals. This role combines technical, project management, and client-facing responsibilities and offers an excellent opportunity to shape land use and transport integration at a senior level.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Delivery:
- Lead and manage the transport planning aspects of development planning projects, from site promotion through to planning submission and post-consent stages.
- Prepare and review key documents such as Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, and Access Feasibility Studies.
- Conduct and oversee junction capacity assessments (e.g. using Junctions 10, LinSig, VISSIM).
- Provide expert advice on access, servicing, parking, active travel and public transport strategies to support development proposals.
- Engage with local authorities, stakeholders, and statutory bodies through pre-application discussions and planning consultations.
Client and Stakeholder Management:
- Act as a key point of contact for clients, delivering high-quality service and building long-term relationships.
- Represent clients at planning committees, appeals, and public consultations as required.
- Provide technical and strategic input to masterplans, site layouts, and development frameworks.
Team and Technical Leadership:
- Mentor junior staff and provide quality assurance across deliverables.
- Support resource planning, work allocation, and technical training within the team.
- Promote best practices in sustainable transport and integrated land use planning.
Business Development:
- Contribute to winning new work through preparation of bids, fee proposals, and client presentations.
- Maintain a strong network within the development and planning industry to identify new opportunities.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Town Planning, Geography, or a related discipline.
- Typically 8+ years of professional experience in transport planning, with a strong focus on development planning.
- Extensive experience delivering transport inputs to support planning applications in the UK.
- Strong knowledge of relevant national and local transport and planning policy frameworks (e.g. NPPF, LTN 1/20).
- Proficiency in modelling and analysis tools (e.g. TRICS, Junctions 10, LinSig, AutoCAD, GIS).
- Excellent report writing, presentation, and communication skills.
- Proven project management experience and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Desirable Skills:
- Chartered status or working toward professional accreditation (e.g. CIHT, ICE, RTPI, TPP).
- Experience working with developers, local planning authorities, or multidisciplinary project teams.
- Understanding of sustainable transport design, including active travel and low-carbon mobility solutions.
