Principal Hardware Architect

Location: Templecombe, United Kingdom (Minimum 3 days onsite)

Thales Underwater Systems (UWS) design, develop and support Sonar Systems applications for anti-submarine warfare and mine hunting. We are looking for a Principal Hardware Architect to join a close-knit, friendly and hardworking team.

About the role

  • Provide support to the PDA (Project Design Authority) and PLA (Product Line Authority) in a technical capacity.
  • Analyse the customer’s and other stakeholders’ needs using various methods (e.g., advanced studies, simulations, mock-ups, models, prototypes).
  • Describe the requirements, functions and interfaces on the component or sub-system.
  • Formalise the specification and the architectural design to develop the component or sub-system.
  • Prepare and perform the component or sub-system verification and validation tests.
  • Ensure hardware architecture stability across lifecycle phases from Bid to Delivery.
  • Direct and coordinate hardware architecture studies.
  • Approve technical, technological, and methodological choices for the hardware architecture.
  • Guarantee adherence to in-scope standards, reuse policy and product development plans.
  • Identify modelling, simulation and prototyping opportunities.
  • Coordinate product definition and assess trade-offs between cost, requirements and technological possibilities.
  • Prepare the Design & Justification Files.
  • Provide knowledge on state-of-the-art hardware architecting and future developments.
  • Monitor technological developments.
  • If mechanically or electrically biased in experience, lead the design elements specific to that discipline.
  • Support and mentor other members of the team.

About You

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team; good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; proactive mindset; logical problem solving.
  • Ability to understand and implement Product Line Engineering strategies.
  • Ability to technically lead design and development activities, interfacing with other technical disciplines as required.
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering Toolsets, Practices and Lifecycles.

Desirable:

  • Hardware design and development experience.

Experience

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in an Engineering role in an appropriate field (e.g., Maritime, Aerospace, Defence).
  • Equivalent experience in a relevant technical field, either mechanical or electronics design.
  • Desirable: experience in underwater acoustics and/or sonar; experience within Systems Engineering; design for sub-sea environment; Design for Cost / Design for Manufacture; IVVQ activities.

Qualifications

  • HNC / HND / Degree or proven experience in a similar role of at least 10 years.

Security clearance

Due to the nature of the work, this role requires UK National status and SC (Security Clearance) with no caveats. If not currently held, successful applicant must undergo, achieve and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. A dual national from a Non-ITAR country may be considered if approved by MOD.

To be eligible for full SC, residence guidelines typically require the last 5 years in the UK, with possible exceptions as described by UK Government vetting guidance.
