What does a “Procedural” Supervisor do at Hogarth?

Proceduralism relies on broken down published components, logical structures and parameters to construct CGI at scale with code rather than manual effort. Procedural Supervisors will be responsible for overseeing the creation and development of these conventions. This role involves working closely with Python developers to define procedural specifications for the FX departments across multiple high-end productions. This role encompasses supervision of FX, CFX, Cloth, Groom, and related VFX simulation disciplines, with a strong emphasis on procedural workflows, pipeline integration, and cross-departmental collaboration. This role reports to Global Head of Pipeline and will work closely with all our global CGI/VFX teams.

Responsibilities

  • Simulation: Define and build procedural systems for creating and scaling FX, CFX, Cloth, Groom and related disciplines to be used in production with an emphasis on photo-realism, accuracy, detail, and function, and provide tools for manual adjustments of parameters at scale.
  • Procedural Specifications: Collaborate with pipeline developers and other Procedural Supervisors to establish clear specifications for how the procedural system should function, covering UVs, rigging and displacement map workflows using publishing and dependency.
  • Quality Control systems: Eye for detail and able to build QA procedures to ensure the highest quality before release of assets.
  • Lead, mentor, and guide a team of FX artists

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of simulation workflows and decision trees using SideFX Houdini.
  • Proficiency in Python scripting for procedural tools and pipeline integration.
  • Extensive experience in managing FX and Simulation within 3D environments in a mature pipeline. Exposure to USD pipeline a plus.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical requirements to Python developers and other technical teams.
  • Ensure FX integrates seamlessly with Lighting, Rendering, and Compositing.
  • Collaborate and communicate with Production, CG Supervisors, and VFX Supervisors to plan FX work.
  • Estimate time and resources for FX tasks and help ensure timely delivery.
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks effectively within the FX team
