Job Title: Process Design Engineer (Fluid Systems) - Submarines
Full-time opportunity with our Design and Execution team has become available for a Process Design Engineer with experience in Fluid System Design to undertake rig design supporting Verification and Validation (V&V) and production testing of Nuclear Steam Raising Plant components.
Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance, and through-life support.
The Process Design Engineer (Fluid Systems) will work as part of Integrated Project Teams to design new and modify existing test rig designs, primarily in our Test Laboratory at Raynesway, Derby. You will collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineers, facilities/operations teams, internal resources, external design partners, and equipment suppliers to develop designs that meet testing requirements for R&T, V&V, component qualification, and through-life performance.
What We Offer: Excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and benefits including bonus, employee support, and discounts. We support hybrid working arrangements, typically requiring attendance at the workplace about three days per week for collaboration and specific tasks.
Your Responsibilities:
- Generating requirements, scoping work, and planning tasks with stakeholders.
- Applying fluid flow and thermal hydraulic theory to inform design decisions regarding system layout, component selection, and sizing, including creation of P&ID diagrams and equipment schedules.
- Sizing and selecting pumps, valves (including safety relief valves), and heat exchangers.
- Developing 1D system flow models and deriving loss coefficients.
- Developing operating philosophies and high-level control system logic.
What We're Looking For:
- Experience in a heavily regulated industry such as Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Energy, Water, or Nuclear.
- Experience in specifying, designing, or operating complex fluid or chemical process systems.
- Degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or related discipline with thermo-fluids content.
- Proven track record of delivering solutions aligned with customer requirements, on time, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, process safety, and relevant codes and standards.
- Understanding of design processes, safety assessment tools (e.g., HAZOP, HAZID, FMEAs).
- Desirable: Experience with 1D flow modeling software like FloMaster.
We are committed to diversity and inclusion and support applications for Security Clearance, which is required for work in our Submarines business.
