Product Owner - Data
New Today
As a data professional, you will work in the Finance team with key stakeholders from architecture and the central data team to develop and implement the Finance Data Strategy.
Acting as a bridge between data teams, stakeholders, and end-users, you will translate complex data concepts into an appropriate data model, fit for Finance and it’s evolving needs, driving value and innovation.
You will have a well-rounded understanding of Finance operations and the change pipeline, ensuring data is used effectively, remains relevant, and maintains accuracy.
We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our London, Swindon or Bournemouth offices . Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
What you’ll be doing
Working with colleagues across Finance, Architecture and our central Data team, you’ll lead on the design and implementation of a data vision and roadmap with clearly defined milestones, specific deliverables and alignment to our strategic blueprint.
You’ll act as a key point of contact for stakeholders regarding major data deliveries, providing regular updates on progress and collaborating with delivery colleagues to resolve challenges as they arise.
You will use your technical expertise to assist with designing and building a data model for Finance, enabling a high-quality solution that can be delivered at pace, delivering a more robust and efficient approach to reporting and analytics.
We’ll need you to develop a good understanding of the applications and systems that we use (as well as the key processes, journeys and products that they support), so you are able to develop a backlog of improvements and enhancements.
By working with other areas of the business, you’ll develop processes to continuously identify, manage and resolve data issues across the Finance function, improving the accuracy and reliability of our most critical data.
As part of the broader community, you’ll have the opportunity to share best practices across the organisation, continuously refine your own expertise, and support the development of a strong data-driven culture.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Finance team at the start of its next evolution, working in a function that is at the heart of all the Society activity.
About you
As a minimum requirement, we'll need you to have...

- A technical knowledge of one of the following coding languages / BI Tools such as SAS, Power BI, SQL, dbt, and Microsoft Power etc.
- A strategic thinker who can create a data roadmap aligned with business goals and customer needs. You'll challenge stakeholders to consider long-term data strategies beyond immediate requirements.
- Proven experience in conveying a data vision to diverse stakeholders and translating technical challenges into simple language. Excellent at collaborating with technical colleagues to address complex data issues and ensure successful delivery.
- A customer-focused approach that evaluates whether data solutions effectively meet user and business needs, paired with the capacity to work with delivery teams to ensure timely implementation of high-quality releases.
- Able to lead as the primary point of contact for data-related issues, taking ownership of problem resolution while maintaining momentum on key initiatives.
- Commercially aware, enabling you to assess the strategic and financial benefits of data initiatives and develop compelling business cases for proposed changes.
- Confident in managing a fast-paced, diverse workload, using sound judgment to prioritise effectively, escalate when necessary, and sustain progress on high-impact data projects.

- Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind
- Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand
- Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development
- Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes.
