Professional or Senior Archaeological Consultant We offer flexible and remote work with focus on skill development and clear career progression. Overview Join AtkinsRéalis Heritage team as a Professional or Senior Archaeological Consultant in London or Birmingham offices. You will manage archaeological fieldwork programmes, provide technical advice, prepare consent and environmental statements, and deliver medium‑to‑large scale projects. Responsibilities
Management and QA of archaeological fieldwork programmes and subcontractors, including supporting and delivering the role of Archaeological Clerk of Works on major infrastructure projects in the South‑East and East of England. Defining and developing the scope, programme, and design of heritage works, including delivery of archaeological mitigation and research strategies, and public archaeological outreach programmes. Providing technical advice to a range of clients and internal teams on diverse projects. Preparing and contributing to EIA screening, environmental statements, heritage statements, desk‑based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications. Assessing heritage constraints to inform and influence design development. Delivery of medium‑to‑large scale projects on time and to budget. Consultation and liaison with heritage stakeholders and client project teams as required. Production of fee proposals and providing technical input on tenders.
About You
A strong background in the UK's historic environment with focus on delivering archaeological fieldwork, commercial awareness and knowledge of the UK planning system. Relevant Masters level, or higher qualification in archaeology or considerable experience in the commercial archaeological sector akin to this level of qualification. Working knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and relevant environmental / heritage legislation, policy and guidance. Knowledge of the consenting process for listed buildings and scheduled monuments. Willingness to work across the UK in client and AtkinsRéalis offices as project requirements dictate, with opportunity to work internationally. Full, clean UK driving licence and Health and Safety awareness and experience on archaeological projects. Member of the Institute for Archaeologists at least at Associate level or above of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA). Experience in a commercial consultancy environment. Capable of working under pressure, meeting critical deadlines and innovating in approach to archaeological and heritage matters. Technical or specialist subject expert (e.g., periods, themes, environmental or post‑excavation specialisms and outreach).
