Senior Recruitment Consultant | Renewable Energy | Project Management l Development l Finance & Investment
Role: Project Manager - Major Projects – BESS
Location: Scotland (site-based 3 days per week, with some flexibility)
The role:
MDE are working closely with a leading renewable energy company to recruit a Project Manager to oversee the delivery of large-scale, transmission-connected Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the UK, starting with a major 300MW+ scheme located in the east of Scotland.
This is a client-side role focused on managing contractors and driving delivery of complex grid connection and substation infrastructure. You’ll take full ownership of programme, cost, quality and compliance from start to finish, reporting directly to the UK Project Delivery Director and helping shape the project team around you.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the successful end-to-end delivery of transmission-connected BESS projects, with a primary focus on substation and grid connection works.
- Oversee all aspects of site-based delivery - including timelines, budgets, contractor management, and interface with National Grid.
- Ensure full technical and regulatory compliance with NESO, National Grid, and UK transmission grid code requirements.
- Act as the main point of contact for EPC contractors, consultants, TSOs/DNOs, and other key stakeholders.
- Manage internal coordination with engineering, legal, commercial, HSE and procurement teams to support project objectives.
- Monitor site performance, carry out inspections, and enforce quality and safety standards across all activities.
- Produce clear and regular reporting for senior management on project milestones, risk, cost control, and delivery status.
- Play a key role in building out the internal delivery team as projects scale.
What We're Looking For
- Degree qualified in Engineering, Project Management, Energy Systems, or a related field. PMP/APM certification or a Master’s is beneficial.
- 10+ years of experience in utility-scale energy infrastructure projects, ideally including battery storage, substations, and HV transmission.
- Strong understanding of National Grid processes, NESO frameworks, TEC requirements, and grid code compliance for transmission-level connections.
- Proven client-side project management background - ideally working within an investment fund, IPP, or asset owner environment.
- Skilled in managing EPC contractors and site-based activities, particularly for high-voltage grid connection projects.
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to manage and track budgets, programmes, and contractor performance.
- Confident communicator, used to leading multi-disciplinary teams and representing the client in external stakeholder environments.
- Willing to be site-based in Scotland 3 days per week, with flexibility for office and remote work where appropriate.
What’s on Offer
- A senior leadership role within a well-capitalised, fast-growing clean energy organisation.
- The opportunity to take ownership of some of the UK’s largest and most complex BESS and transmission projects.
- Competitive base salary of £80,000–£100,000 depending on experience.
- Performance-based bonus structure and comprehensive benefits package.
- Flexible working model, with a balance of site presence and home/office-based support.
- Long-term career growth as part of an organisation actively scaling its project delivery function across the UK and Europe.
- Collaborative and supportive culture with strong backing from senior leadership.
Why This Role?
Join a well-backed organisation that’s actively growing its UK renewable energy portfolio. This is a high-impact leadership opportunity with a major pipeline of transmission-connected projects ahead - offering long-term progression, influence, and visibility across the sector.
