We are looking for a talented Regulatory Legal Counsel to join our legal team at M&S. You will be an enthusiastic and experienced lawyer with a passion for retail who enjoys being continually challenged, and demonstrates sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.

In this pivotal role you will act as a trusted advisor to colleagues across the business, providing legal support on a broad remit of regulatory matters, including Competition Law, Consumer Rights, Product Compliance, ESG, Food Safety, Health & Safety and Anti‑bribery & Corruption. You’ll also play a key role in managing regulatory inquiries, supporting product teams, and contributing to wider legal projects that underpin business growth and transformation

To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected.

What you’ll do

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Provide expert legal counsel on regulatory matters, ensuring compliance across Competition Law, Consumer Rights, Product Compliance, ESG, Food Safety, and Health & Safety.
  • Advise senior executives and business teams on regulatory interpretation, compliance risks, and public policy issues.
  • Support product development and operational teams with pragmatic legal solutions that enable innovation and growth.
  • Manage and resolve regulatory issues, respond to inquiries, and oversee compliance in current and future operations.
  • Contribute to wider legal projects, collaborating across departments to support business continuity and transformation initiatives.

Who you are

Your skills and experience will include:

  • UK-qualified solicitor with at least 3 years’ post-qualification experience focused on regulatory matters.
  • Prior experience working in-house counsel (potentially gained by secondment), with a proactive and pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
  • Customer-focused, with a passion for innovation, simplification, and enabling commercial outcomes.
  • Highly organised, resilient, and able to prioritise effectively in a fast-moving, dynamic environment.
  • Desirable: Experience in Competition Law, Consumer Rights, Health & Safety, Food Safety, or supporting an FMCG business.
