Research Engineer/Advanced Research Engineer in Non-Destructive Testing of Composites

New Today

Overview

NCC is a world-leading authority on composite materials research, development, and manufacturing. We work with global leaders across industries such as aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, and defence to develop cutting-edge composite solutions. As part of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult, NCC is at the forefront of innovation, helping businesses turn ideas into reality.

We are seeking a motivated and ambitious Research Engineer/Advanced Research Engineer with an interest in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of composite materials, and a specialism in advanced ultrasound. This is a unique opportunity to join our team and contribute to pioneering research while receiving world-class training and support to gain industry-recognised NDT qualifications.

What you'll be doing

  • Technical Leadership: Lead technical aspects of various NDT-related projects, particularly related to waveform propagation and advanced signal processing in ultrasonic inspections of composites.
  • Research Support: Assist in the development and application of non-destructive testing methods for composite materials and structures, supporting key research and industrial projects.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Gather and interpret testing data to evaluate material properties, detect defects, and determine structural performance.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with experienced engineers, scientists, and industry partners to solve real-world challenges in composite manufacturing and testing.
  • Reporting: Prepare and present clear and concise reports on findings, results, and recommendations to internal teams and external stakeholders.

What we're looking for

  • A Master’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in post-graduate or post-doctoral research, preferably in composites, materials testing, or non-destructive evaluation, through academic projects or internships.

Essential Skills:

  • Fundamental understanding of ultrasound generation and propagation.
  • Ability to capture, process, manipulate, and analyse raw signal data. Experience in processing large volumes of data is a plus.
  • Competence in software tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for the analysis and interpretation of different data types. Signal processing experience is a plus.
  • Ability to extract information from published research and apply via suitable software, to captured data.

Desirable Skills:

  • Interest in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods, with some exposure or understanding of composite materials.

Personal Attributes:

  • Enthusiasm for specialising in NDT of composites.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical findings clearly to a range of stakeholders.
