About the Job
MS Amlin is seeking an experienced Reserving Systems Manager to help them design and build a new Reserving process. The role is a direct report of the Head of Reserving. The role holder will manage another newly created role (Reserving Database Developer) who will build the SQL database forming a critical component in the new process
The role of Reserving Systems Manager will initially be focused on designing and building a new Reserving System with close collaboration with the current Reserving team, IT team, and other key stakeholders especially within Finance.
The core principle of new system is to create an Actuarial Data Warehouse (ADW), a SQL database that pulls all the data that reserving will ever need into one place. From this database analysis templates will then be automatically populated for a new quarter with all the assumptions rolled from the prior quarter, analysis performed, and new output all saved back to the ADW. This will make the standard quarterly process much more efficient and controlled and will reduce the number of supporting EUC applications.
During the quarterly reserving process the new system should auto populate analysis templates for the reserving team to use and then the selections will be saved back to the database.
What you’ll spend your time doing:
During the initial 18 months the focus will be on capturing requirements and designing and building the new system. Beyond this, the role will transition to one of continually improving the reserving process over time to make it more freeing up time to focus on analysis, collaborate with the business and improve key stakeholder communication.
During the Project Phase
- Capture the requirements of the reserving team to design the new Reserving process including understanding the data architecture of the company, the analysis needs of the reserving team, the reporting needs of the reserving team and how the system sits within the IT landscape of MS Amlin.
- Manage the Reserving System Developer to build and test the new Reserving System
- Work in an agile manner with the Reserving team during the build to make sure that all requirements are met and to test elements of the system as it develops
- To design and create the analysis templates that the Reserving team will use for assessing attritional, large and catastrophe losses including the selection of which tool will be used to do this
- Create key summary exhibits to be used in the communication of the output from the quarterly reserving analysis when communicating through the various governance channels (UW & Claims meetings, Reserve Committee, Audit Committee, Auditors and SAO providers)
- To support the extraction of data from the system for key analysis supporting reserving assumptions such as loss development patterns and Initial Expected Loss Ratios
Post Go-Live of the System
- Support the quarterly reserving cycle in terms of rolling out the analysis templates each quarter
- Assess and prioritise the areas for improvement in the system and manage the Reserving System Developer in implementing those improvements
- Support the Reserving team in how to use the new system and make the most of the potential efficiency gains that it has to offer
- Support initiatives to improve the efficiency in how Regulatory reporting is carried out from the new system
What you’ll need:
It is expected that the jobholder will be a senior actuary, with extensive reserving experience in the general insurance industry, preferably within the London Market/Lloyd’s. Experience of working in a role focused on reserving systems is essential. Experience of developing a reserving system from scratch would be desirable. The ability to show initiative and resilience to cope with unanticipated challenges is important. The ability to work closely with Data, IT Professionals, Actuaries and Finance staff in an open and collaborative manner is critical.
The jobholder will be joining a large, experienced and diverse actuarial team.
