Overview
In Service Submarine Team (ISM) are responsible for delivering “safe to Operate” submarines to maintain CASD and National Capability. The ESO SE post manages the Whole Submarine Safety & Environmental Section (DAWS) within ISM to ensure ISM provides timely and effective support to the Submarine Fleet and contributes to the delivery of the ISM outputs specified in the Submarine Support Management Programme (SSMP) and ISM Engineering and Safety Plans.
Working within ISM, the post holder is the Engineering System Owner and Subject Matter Expert for Platform and Platform Systems.
ISM-PCE-DepHd (as Platform Authority) (PA) to be the secretary for the Platform Systems Safety Committee (PSSC).

Responsibilities
- Responsible for the management and delivery of the Safety Management System and arrangements for managing safety risk through the fleet lifecycle, supporting the PA/PCE in communicating the nuclear and platform safety risks to the Duty Holders (ODH, DDH and SDH).
- Responsible for the production, management, maintenance and delivery of the Platform Safety Cases along with management of the interfaces and boundaries with all supporting safety cases.
- Responsible for the safety case management, safety management and safety/nuclear risks for Laid-Up Submarines under the current SDDI MOU, ISM remains the maintenance authority for submarines in lay-up awaiting defuel and disposal.
- Responsible for the safety case management, safety management and safety/nuclear risks for all in-service submarines in the two classes: ASTUTE and VANGUARD Classes (including platforms in DMP).
- Responsible for providing the assurance to the PA that the safety arrangements and documentation supporting platforms transferred from build into In-Service is fit for purpose.
- Responsible for providing safety oversight to all platform design changes ensuring whole-boat safety and interfaces to key systems are assessed and maintained to design intent.
- Responsible for providing assurance to the PA that all materials temporarily or permanently taken onto platforms are approved in accordance with NATG and ISM processes, including those from both NP and TSPTs.
- Responsible for the management and delivery of the Safety Management System and arrangements for managing safety risk through the fleet lifecycle, supporting the PA/PCE in communicating the nuclear and platform safety risks to the Duty Holders (ODH, DDH and SDH).
- As Platform Authority, act as secretary for the Platform Systems Safety Committee (PSSC) and oversee interfaces with the Platform Systems Safety Case portfolio.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Engineering System Owner and Subject Matter Expert for Platform and Platform Systems within ISM.
- Experience in safety management systems, safety case development and delivery, and risk communication to duty holders.
- Knowledge of submarine classes ASTUTE and VANGUARD and related platform safety interfaces.
- Ability to provide assurance on safety arrangements transferred from build to in-service and on platform design change governance.
