Senior Applied Scientist Applied Science

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Applied Scientist to join our Applied Science team in a high-impact individual contributor role. You’ll help drive the end-to-end lifecycle of projects — from identifying opportunities in literature, through proof-of-concept, to production deployment.

You’ll convert cutting-edge research in neurosymbolic AI into real, production-grade language generation systems. This includes designing and experimenting with hybrid architectures that challenge current thinking in reasoning and planning, and leading applied research projects from ideation and literature review to prototyping and deployment.

Alongside this, you’ll write high-quality, robust code that integrates neural and symbolic components, and analyse large-scale datasets to support both neural training and symbolic extraction. Collaboration will be central: you’ll work closely with a team of scientists and engineers, articulating complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll balance scientific rigour with practical application, helping shape not only our research but also the products and systems that bring our novel approach to life.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll take ownership of impactful applied science projects that push the boundaries of what’s possible:

  • Convert cutting-edge research in neurosymbolic AI into real, production-grade language generation systems.
  • Design and experiment with hybrid neurosymbolic architectures that challenge current thinking in reasoning and planning.
  • Lead applied research projects end-to-end: from ideation and literature review to prototyping and deployment.
  • Write high-quality, robust code that integrates neural and symbolic components.
  • Collaborate with a team of scientists and engineers, articulating complex ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Analyse and inspect large-scale datasets to support neural training and symbolic extraction.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who combines deep technical expertise with creativity, collaboration, and drive:

  • Deep learning expertise with ~2+ years in language generation.
  • Experience with LLMs, neurosymbolic integration, and knowledge representation.
  • Strong Python skills and experience with ML frameworks (PyTorch, HF, TensorFlow, JAX).
  • Demonstrable track record of end-to-end applied research.
  • Excellent communication skills; proven mentoring ability.
  • Collaborative and proactive in fast-paced environments.

Desirable:

  • Experience with symbolic reasoning engines.
  • Technical writing (publications, blogs).
  • Start-up experience.
  • Familiarity with Git/GitHub and cloud deployment.

What’s in it for You

Joining UnlikelyAI means being part of a mission-driven team working on problems that truly matter:

  • Work on original, high-impact research problems.
  • Explore novel neurosymbolic approaches at scale.
  • Join a team of world-class scientists and engineers.
  • Be part of shaping a new paradigm in explainable AI.
