Senior Backend Engineer

The opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Backend Engineer to join Attest and help us build the future of the Attest product. You’ll be at the heart of not just building exciting new features but shaping technical direction and system architecture. You will help maintain and raise our standards.
You’ll be working in a cross functional product squad, with Product, Design and Data Science on a modern tech stack, including: Java, Kafka, Postgres as well as integrations with our external providers. Our cross-functional teams collaborate with stakeholders across the business to help deliver value to our customers.
Salary
We are able to offer between £95-105K depending on experience.
In person and remote working balance
We embrace a flexible hybrid work model. While we don't mandate specific office days, we encourage Attesters to work on-site 1-2 days per week, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays. This approach allows us to collaborate in person, while ensuring enough time remotely for deep, focused work.
What you’ll be doing…
- As a Backend Engineer II, you will work within a squad collaborating with the whole team to identify and create best-in-class products.
- Influence the team’s roadmap by proactively identifying opportunities, scoping well-defined technical solutions, and aligning engineering direction with business value.
- Champion initiatives to reduce technical debt and raise long-term code quality.
- Lead initiatives that significantly improve engineering efficiency across the chapter, through patterns, tooling, CI/CD and processes
- Play a key role in planning, stand-ups and retrospectives, helping guide discussions and unblock the team.
- Actively mentor and support engineers across squads, providing technical guidance, conducting design reviews, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Help shape the direction of the backend chapter, setting standards and driving best practices across teams.
- Own the design and evolution of scalable, performant, and secure system architectures that set the standard for the chapter.
- Explore innovative ways to solve problems, and become an expert in complex systems.
- Deliver impact regularly by balancing code quality, scalability, and speed, even in ambiguous environments.
What’s in it for you…
- Would like the autonomy to find the best solutions that deliver value to customers
- Want to rapidly deliver valuable software both internally and externally
- Prefer simplicity over complexity in software systems
- Are passionate about working with other engineers and cross-functional teams
Amazing benefits…
- Work from anywhere up to 20 days a year
- 25 days holiday per year plus additional festive days
- £240 per-annum L&D budget
- Private Medical Insurance through Bupa
- Access to free therapy through Spill
- 1 day per-quarter to do charity or community work
- Enhanced parental leave (18 weeks paid leave for Primary carer)
- Up to 12 weeks paid leave for premature births and neonatal care
- Paid leave for IVF and fertility treatment and pregnancy loss
- Share options
We’d love to hear from you, if…
You align with and actively embody our core values, which are more than just words—they are the foundation of everything we do. Our values drive our decisions, shape our culture, and define who we are as a team. Specifically this means:
- You love being Outcome Focused and use data and feedback to identify and solve problems and seize opportunities
- You are sought out for your technical expertise and enjoy mentoring others to grow their impact.
- You enjoy delivering impact at both squad and chapter levels, raising engineering standards.
- You Win Together, embracing and valuing all perspectives to find the best process, solution or product for a wide variety of people with differing opinions, experiences and ideas.
- You lead by example, embodying collaboration and shared success
- You are a confident, clear communicator - sharing the what, the why and the how of what you are thinking and doing in all directions.
- You have a passion for optimization and efficiency. You're not afraid to challenge the status quo and seek innovative solutions where they add value.
- You Embrace The Future and help bring others along with you.
This role might not be for you if …
- You are concerned with structure, every opinion at Attest is just as loud and valued
- You prefer to work in a silo and not collaborate with those outside of your squad/function
- You prefer to build with large amounts of complexity, we value simplicity and delivering impact
- You prefer to have a set way of working and do not want to embrace changes to your style
Sound like you? Then apply, and let’s have a conversation! We want to give everyone the opportunity to showcase their best selves during the interview process and beyond. Do let us know if there are any adjustments you’d like to make to ensure it’s more inclusive – we’re learning too, so we’re more than happy to adapt and accommodate where possible.
