Senior BI Developer role at Sage in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom. The Senior BI Developer plays a strategic and hands-on role in designing, developing, and optimising data models and pipelines that drive business-critical insights and enable data-informed decision-making. Supporting the Performance Marketing function and broader business teams, this role leads the development of scalable, governed, and high-performing data solutions that underpin reporting, analytics, and AI-enhanced capabilities.

Key Accountabilities and Decision Ownership

  • Lead the design and development of robust, scalable data models and transformation pipelines.
  • Own and maintain central semantic models, ensuring consistency and accuracy across reporting outputs.
  • Optimise performance of data models and queries, proactively identifying and resolving bottlenecks.
  • Mentor junior BI developers, providing technical guidance, code reviews, and training on tools and business context.
  • Collaborate with IT and data platform teams to enhance ingestion processes and leverage new technologies.
  • Champion best practices in version control, testing, and CI/CD.
  • Translate complex business requirements into effective technical solutions, engaging stakeholders to ensure alignment and clarity.
  • Lead delivery of high-impact data initiatives, managing timelines, risks, and outcomes.
  • Contribute to the integration of AI and machine learning into BI workflows to enhance insight generation and operational processes.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for data models, KPIs, business logic, and governance standards.

Skills, Know-How and Experience

Must Have:

  • Advanced proficiency in data transformation and modelling.
  • Strong experience with BI platforms (e.g., Power BI, Microsoft Fabric), including semantic modelling and performance tuning.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor technical teams, with a focus on quality, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative development workflows (e.g., GitHub, GitLab).
  • Understanding of workflow automation and low-code platforms (e.g., Power Automate, Power Apps).
  • Ability to operate strategically and tactically in a fast-paced, agile environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with cloud-based data integration and orchestration tools (e.g., AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory).
  • Exposure to AI and machine learning integration in analytics workflows (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, or similar AI assistants).
  • Knowledge of metadata and data governance practices using tools such as Collibra.
  • Familiarity with marketing technologies (e.g., Eloqua, Google Analytics) and understanding of marketing performance metrics and KPIs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Technical / Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in BI development, data modelling, or data engineering, including leadership responsibilities.
