About the RoleBalfour Beatty Power T&D are looking for a Senior Cable Design Engineer to join their growing business in Derby.The position involves carrying out the design of high voltage and extra high voltage power cable systems with detailed design information, initially to allow cost estimating of proposed systems and following receipt of an order to carry out the contract engineering.What you’ll be doing: The position involves the responsibility, along with other members of the design team, for all aspects of cable system design including electrical, mechanical and installation engineering design. Under the instruction of the Senior Projects Design Engineer, the overall system design for all BB Power T&D Core work enquiries and projects will be performed in accordance with Balfour Beatty Design Procedure PN/EP/201, National Grid and DNO procedures, and standard design rules and procedures defined by the Cabling Design Manager.Key DutiesThe preparation of designs and drawings for cable supporting steelwork and associated foundationsCarrying out loading calculations to prove adequacy of proposed designsDesign of cable installation systems and carrying out pulling tension calculationsLiaising with fabricators and equipment suppliersReading client enquiry specifications and drawingsLiaising with client representatives and Balfour Beatty estimators and operations engineers as requiredAttending site visits and meetings with clients and / or Balfour Beatty staffPreparing electrical system designsCalculating cable sizesPerforming rating calculationsPreparing material schedules/bills of quantitiesWorking to international, national and client specificationsLiaising with suppliers/manufacturersHydraulic calculationsIdentifying designs where standard design rules and procedures cannot be applied, and referring these to the SPDE and / or DMLiaising with draughts persons and other engineering staffChecking work carried out by draughts persons and other design engineersLiaising with the SPDE / DM and other design engineers as required resolving civil, structural, installation etc. design issuesCarry out design risk assessments in accordance with CDM requirements and prepare and present Health & Safety files.Who We’re Looking ForDegree level qualifications in Electrical or Mechanical EngineeringExperience and knowledge of EHV (11kV to 400kV) power systems and equipment and ideally EHV power cables and substation equipmentKnowledge of substation electrical designAbility to interpret engineering drawings and circuit schematicsUnderstanding of cable installation techniquesAble to work under pressure and to tight deadlinesExcellent interpersonal skills and highly organisedAccurate, methodical and articulateGood communication skillsPossesses the ability to use AutoCADHolds a full UK driving licenceWhy Work for UsDay in, day out, our teams deliver some of the UK’s most ambitious, exciting and meaningful projects; developing, building and maintaining the vital infrastructure that supports national economies and strengthens communities.BenefitsSmart working, giving you more flexibility such as staggered start and finish times, with up to 40% remote working, where roles allow.25 days paid annual leave (pro rata)Family friendly policies which include 28 weeks full pay for maternity/adoption leave and four weeks full pay for paternity/partners leavePension, share incentive plan, volunteering leave, recognition schemes and much more…About UsBalfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution teams work with regional, national and international electricity network owners and operators to provide technical engineering solutions across the full spectrum of the electricity grid, including overhead lines, cabling, substations and distribution networks.
