About Our Maritime Business
Our Maritime team are at the forefront of innovative maritime planning, design and development. We are multi-disciplinary experts working on international projects to create successful ports and maritime infrastructure worldwide. We provide expert commercial, technical and operational advice and create master plans across five continents for a wide range of port projects. We are one of the largest and most experienced teams of port planning professionals globally, leading feasibility studies and master plans. From our Maritime offices in Exeter, Newcastle, Liverpool, London and Brighton, we lead the company’s shipyard projects in collaboration with colleagues globally.
Role Context
If you’re a structural/civil marine engineer looking to work on globally significant projects, this role offers a step up in the career ladder. It provides exposure to local and global projects while working with leading professionals in the Shipyard sector. While the Exeter team’s key focus is defence and nuclear within the maritime sector, this is not a pre-requisite or only area of the business.
This role is part of the Exeter team growth and we offer remote working opportunities and flexible or part-time arrangements as discussed.
Responsibilities
Prepare designs and analysis for maritime structures from concept to detailed design
Collect and collate design data
Carry out inspections and surveys
Produce design calculations and review calculations produced by others
Produce outline models, drawings and CAD details (Revit environment preferred; detailed drafting/modelling by modellers); check and review prior to issue
Prepare draft Bills of Quantities, contract documents and specifications
Prepare reports and presentations
Undertake engineering analyses and reporting
Provide engineering judgement and advice; contribute to study reports
Manage and direct more junior staff
Coach junior staff in technical matters
Autonomy and responsibility to work on the projects you find interesting
Qualifications and Skills
Analytical ability to independently undertake design and analysis with support for complex tasks
Strong communication skills, both oral and written; comfortable presenting to team members, clients and stakeholders
Client orientation with a professional client-facing approach
Conceptual ability to take designs from concept to ready-for-construction
Problem solving with the ability to think laterally and develop solutions
Relationship building; ability to build networks and act as a trusted advisor to clients
Personable; approachable, relatable and empathetic
Civil or Structural Engineering degree (or equivalent)
Chartered member of a relevant institution (e.g., CEng MICE or CEng MIStructE) or working towards
Good written and verbal communication skills
Professional experience in heavy civils projects
Experience in reinforced concrete design and finite element analysis desirable but not essential
Retaining wall and piling design experience desirable but not essential
Willing to travel occasionally throughout the UK and overseas
