About the Role

Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Senior Civils Substation Designer to join the Power T&D team. The role is open to full‑time, part‑time and job‑share candidates, and offers a flexible working policy.

Key responsibilities include working with the project team, designers and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works in line with project objectives. The candidate will take responsibility for design delivery and suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects, with particular focus on Substations Civils delivery.

Key Accountabilities

  • Undertake the design and co‑ordination of civil designs required on substation projects, from initial feasibility assessment through to detail design, installation and final removal, including temporary works design when appropriate.
  • Ensure timely delivery and high quality of designs, preparing reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level, compliant with Client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
  • Capture Client requirements, including those not explicitly stated within the contract.
  • Contribute to robust pricing and design delivery solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project.
  • Undertake reinforced concrete design and detailing compliant with required standards.
  • Analyse existing foundations, construction site layouts and CDM implementation.
  • Check design calculations performed by other engineering colleagues.
  • Assist in the management of the tender process.
  • Support provision of designs, volumes and quantities for tender submissions.
  • Work closely with Project Teams to maintain common objectives and ensure work is in line with project priorities.
  • Undertake site visits as necessary to plan and inspect foundation and other civil works.
  • Analyse contract documents to ensure correct interpretation of customer/consultant intentions.
  • Assist in training new designers and/or trainees.
  • Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with design outputs.

You Will Have The Following

  • Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil, structural or geotechnical engineering.
  • Professional membership with ICE or IStructE and working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Strong, proven post‑graduate experience in the civil engineering industry.
  • Experience supervising sub‑consultants or subcontractors.
  • Proven experience designing civil engineering works and/or civil design of substations.
  • Strong experience managing design of civil or geotechnical engineering works.
  • IT literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD).
  • Good knowledge of National Grid Technical Specifications and Design Handbooks.
  • Strong understanding of BIM principles (PAS1192 and ISO16950).

Desirable Skills

  • Experience designing and checking temporary works for civil engineering projects.
  • Experience of substation structural components.
  • Experience of drainage design and water management.
  • Revit, Civil 3D, Microdrainage software usage.
