Senior Commercial Manager in the Digital business unit, focusing predominantly on a pan-defence IS transformation contract. The role is full-time based in Bristol, with hybrid working available. This is a non-line management role within the BDUK Digital Commercial Team, reporting to the Digital Head of Commercial. The Digital business unit is one of 3 business units in BDUK, and the digital commercial team supports a portfolio of complex contracts, mainly with the UK MOD, with ongoing growth activities and long-term contracted programmes. The business growth comprises a mix of on-contract change and new business bids and proposals, in line with company growth strategy.
Across this portfolio, you’ll work with energetic and motivated integrated teams to deliver for our customer. The Commercial function provides value-adding business partnering in all phases of the contract lifecycle. In this position, you will support the portfolio and collaborate with colleagues across teams to manage a wide variety of responsibilities in a dynamic environment. Typical duties include contract management execution, providing expert commercial support, exercising sound business judgment to optimise contract delivery, and working closely with our customer; leading and supporting contract change and amendment proposals of varying sizes and complexity. You may participate in and support other strategic imperatives of the business as we pursue growth opportunities within and outside of our current portfolio.
Notable features of the role include leading the negotiation, mobilisation and commercial delivery of a complex and high-profile digital services transformation contract, overseeing supplier and intercompany flow-down and mobilisation, managing the discharge of contractual obligations, interpreting contractual terms and positions, building and maintaining effective customer and stakeholder relationships, proactive risk and opportunity management, preparing and negotiating proposals for contract change and amendments as well as proposals for new business, managing intercompany arrangements and supplier flow-down, proactive participation in all required programme and customer meetings, and providing governance to changes and proposals to ensure robust, protective and profitable outcomes.
There may be opportunities to participate in early campaign phases to commercially influence and shape aligned to business strategy and core capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Lead final negotiations, mobilisation and delivery of a complex and high-profile digital transformation and services contract.
- Oversee supplier and intercompany flow-down, negotiation and mobilisation.
- Monitor and ensure that contractual obligations are discharged; ensure dependencies are fulfilled.
- Support the wider Digital commercial team as required.
- Review, interpret and draft terms and conditions, including highly complex arrangements.
- Perform comprehensive contract management duties, addressing programme issues and mitigating risks.
- Develop and review statements of work; lead and participate in contract change and tasking proposal development, negotiation and award activities.
- Develop and support cost estimates and determine profit or earnings objectives.
- Perform risk assessments to balance risks and opportunities; review and approve proposals and other products developed by peers.
- Review and approve other agreements with outside parties; adhere to BDUK Commercial policies/procedures and applicable regulations.
- Submit offers and commit the company within permitted delegated authority; participate in internal governance (bid/no-bid, make/buy) and establish processes with the Commercial Team and other programmes.
Senior Commercial Manager is expected to understand programme and financial contractual performance, develop recommendations and solutions, and influence decision-making to meet business goals. You will work alongside contract delivery and proposal team members and customer counterparts, building respectful and effective working relationships in a matrix organisation. Technical expertise is required in Contract Formation, Contract Management Systems, Contract Structure Knowledge, Negotiation, Estimating Methods, Proposal Processes, Risk & Opportunity Management, Business Case Development, and applicable legislation, regulation and standards.

- Able to work under supervision and independently
- 7+ years of experience in a multinational/global company environment with UK defence expertise desirable
