ERM, the worlds largest pure play sustainability consultancy, are looking for an experienced Marine Geophysicist to join the welcoming and experienced marine geoscience team. Our Capital Project Delivery team includes an integrated marine geophysical and geotechnical team offering specialist services to clients across sectors including marine aggregates, offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, subsea cables, coastal/marine engineering, and ports/harbours developments. Our Capital Project Delivery team are driving the development of ERM’s Marine Centre of Excellence; a world-leading hub of marine environmental and planning consultancy services for a wide range of clients across seabed user sectors and marine projects, including offshore wind.

The role will comprise analysing and reporting on hydrographic and marine geophysical data, such as bathymetry, sidescan sonar, magnetometer, and shallow seismic data for various purposes including engineering, habitat assessments, EIAs, and archaeology. The successful candidate will also have an understanding of the marine hydrodynamic environment and sediment transport processes, including hydrodynamic models, and know how to incorporate these into interpretations. The resulting reports guide our existing clients on infrastructure design and installation, impact assessments, asset management, decommissioning, and licensing considerations.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse and report on hydrographic and marine geophysical data (e.g., bathymetry, sidescan sonar, magnetometer, shallow seismic) for engineering, habitat assessments, EIAs, and archaeology.
  • Incorporate understanding of the marine hydrodynamic environment and sediment transport processes, including hydrodynamic models, into interpretations.
  • Prepare reports that support infrastructure design and installation, impact assessments, asset management, decommissioning, and licensing considerations.
  • Provide support for offshore survey design, technical specification, procurement, management, and data quality control.
  • Contribute to the development of ERM’s Marine Centre of Excellence within the Capital Project Delivery team.

Qualifications

  • Degree-qualified in a relevant marine geoscience, geophysics, or oceanography subject.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro or QGIS, and specialist geoscience software (e.g., IHS Kingdom, SonarWiz, or Moga Seaview).
  • Strong understanding of offshore geophysical acquisition equipment and techniques.
  • Experience interpreting hydrographic and geophysical data, including sub-bottom profiler data.
  • Strong understanding of the marine hydrodynamic environment and sediment transport processes.
  • Skilled in technical and non-technical writing and verbal communication.
  • Keen to learn and develop within a diverse team of subject matter experts in an international company.
  • Offshore survey experience is essential.
  • Experience in writing chapters for Environmental Impact Assessments is desirable.

Location and Collaboration

Training and support will be provided to adjust to office-based working, project management, and consulting skills. Although Southampton is the preferred base, there is also the option to work in other ERM offices including London and Norwich.
