Senior Data Security Architect — Manchester Digital
The Government Digital Service (GDS) is the digital centre of government. We lead the Government Digital and Data function and champion the work of digital teams across government. We are part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and employ more than 1,000 people with hubs in Manchester, London and Bristol.
Overview
As a GDS Senior Data Security Architect, you’ll collaborate with other government departments to develop and publish data security standards for government and the wider public sector. You’ll work in an agile environment, with continual delivery techniques and devops cultures, and you’ll present to stakeholders at all levels. Some travel to different government departments and agencies is required.
Responsibilities
- develop data security standards for government
- advise on data security for government services
- perform threat modelling as part of security risk assessments
- apply Secure by Design activities to government services
- identify opportunities to use privacy-enhancing technologies to enable data-driven collaboration while protecting privacy and security
- contribute to API design, including securing APIs
- develop data security controls to mitigate risks for AI systems
- work in agile multi-disciplinary teams using tools such as GitHub and follow continuous delivery and DevOps practices
Person specification
- balance security needs with user access to derive value from data
- communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- identify opportunities for innovation with new tools and data uses, including privacy-enhancing technologies
- understand data governance and ensure compliance
- explain data modelling concepts and maintain relevant data models
- develop standards, policies and guidance to secure data with subject matter experts
- design data architecture aligned with enterprise standards
- demonstrate strong data security knowledge and apply it at a technical level
- advise risk owners on risk impact and methodologies; understand proportionality of risk

Selection process

Roles and location details
Roles are based in Manchester with options for hybrid working. The department operates a discretionary hybrid policy with 40-60% office presence per accounting period; home working is limited to flexible arrangements.
