Overview

The Data Solutions and Engineering group within Computational Catalyst is accountable for establishing a common Data Fabric which connects our Data Pipelines and Applications for data acquisition, collection, storage, transformation, linkage and sharing. This team builds delightful applications and systems for our stakeholders with a strategic mindset and manages the end-to-end product lifecycle to enable scientific insights and AI/ML workflows. The Senior Director of Software Engineering will collaborate with Software Engineers, Product Tech/ML Ops, and Function Tech Leads to drive this transformation.

As the Senior Director of Software Engineering, you will be a visionary technical leader defining and executing the strategy for our foundational Data Fabric and building the teams that make it a reality.

The Opportunity

  • Provide the strategic engineering vision for our Data Fabric, identifying opportunities to build common, scalable solutions while consolidating legacy systems.
  • Recruit, hire, and develop an inclusive, high-performing software engineering organization, fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Drive technical excellence by setting and championing best practices for data pipelines and applications across scientific domains.
  • Lead the architectural design of our data ecosystem, leveraging modern patterns like microservices and event-driven design to ensure our systems are robust and interoperable.
  • Champion an Open Source, Cloud First, API First, and AI First approach to problem-solving, influencing the adoption of key technologies and methodologies.
  • Integrate diverse data sets to enable a wide range of use cases, from advanced AI/ML models and natural language search to reporting and analytics.
  • Establish and foster strong collaborative partnerships with scientific and technical leaders across the organization to break down silos and accelerate innovation.
  • Act as a key contributor to our resourcing strategy, ensuring priorities are staffed effectively to deliver maximum impact.

Who You Are

You are an experienced and highly credible servant leader with a passion for building exceptional teams and pioneering technology. You excel at creating trusted partnerships and can align diverse groups toward a common technical vision, mentoring and coaching others to achieve outstanding results. You bring the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a similar technical field (Master's or higher preferred), with strong experience in software engineering.
  • Extensive formal leadership experience, with a proven ability to build, manage, and develop high-performing engineering teams.
  • Deep expertise in modern software and data engineering, including full-stack development, cloud-native architecture, data analytics (SQL/NoSQL, ETL), and APIs (REST, GraphQL).
  • Demonstrated experience leading the technical direction of large, complex projects across multiple teams, influencing stakeholders to achieve outstanding results.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to optimize for long-term goals, paired with a strong sense of urgency and a passion for technical excellence and user-centric design.

The Position

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we are forming a new central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). gCS aims to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed. The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious, action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science, focused on modernizing our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable, integrated solutions that power scientific discovery and accelerate decision making. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Data Solutions and Engineering, this Function Tech Lead will define and execute the strategy for the Data Fabric for this newly created group.
