PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
In BBC Distribution and Business Development (D&BD), we ensure that the BBC’s public services are innovative, prominent and available to all, now and in the future. Within D&BD, the Digital Partnerships Team has taken on responsibility for oversight of work to transition to an all-internet future for UK TV and Radio. We are running a major ‘Digital Transition’ project, in collaboration with many internal and external partners, to understand, plan and execute the steps we need to take for a successful transition to online-only distribution which meets 3 conditions: everyone is connected; everyone has access to high quality content; and everyone benefits from a fair and prosperous media economy.
You will be joining this long term project at a critical time, as the Government process to consider its future options around TV distribution peaks. We are looking for a highly motivated, proactive person to join our team particularly to lead on the overall project management of the Digital Transition workstream and to take on responsibility for resolving a number of discrete strategic challenges within the workstream.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Leading on the overall project management of the Digital Transition workstream.
- Acting as the main point of contact for strategy and the BBC’s Transformation Office, ensuring that the workstream is being run in accordance with their Programme structure and providing information to them accurately and on time.
- Developing a comprehensive overview of all elements of the Digital Transition workstream in order to track progress and understand how the workstream is contributing to the delivery of the BBC’s strategic priorities
- Devising and delivering fit-for-purpose workstream governance including ensuring the workstream leadership group, steering groups and other regular meetings are productive.
- Producing high quality, clear documentation as needed to inform senior stakeholders about workstream progress including internal advice (e.g. to BBC Executive Committee and Board) and external communications.
- Lead on understanding, researching, advising on and resolving a number of strategic challenges we have identified as inherent to Digital Transition, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Supporting the Controller of digital transition and rest of the team as needed.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
We are looking for someone who has a good understanding of factors affecting the BBC’s future strategy and the wider UK media and digital sectors. You be able to see the big picture as well as having good attention to detail. You will be a strong collaborator who knows how to get the best out of people and be comfortable working with legal and technical experts.
Specifically, we are looking for the following skills:
- Understanding of the UK media sector – An interest in and knowledge of the changing internet and media landscape , audio and news and where the BBC fits into this. Ideally, a good understanding of the BBC’s current approach to distribution in the UK and of the issues that will affect and change this in the future.
- Strategic mindset – Evidence of being able to think strategically in the context of the BBC and UK media landscape, for example, being able to understand and articulate the long-term impact of decisions taken now about Digital Transition.
- Leadership – A track-record in delivering results by leading people, even where you don’t necessarily have direct control.
- Project management – Experience shaping, driving and delivering projects from start to finish and running tight and effective governance.
- Stakeholder management – You will have a highly collaborative approach to working with stakeholders, internally and externally and experience in establishing and achieving shared objectives with other teams.
- Technical knowledge and or interest in how media distribution works across a number of technologies. Strong excel and modelling skills a real plus
- Excellent communication skills – You will be able to summarise ideas and information in a simple and concise way. You will have first-class writing and slide-drafting skills.
