Senior Engineer (Roads) – WSP, Leeds

As part of a high‑performing team, you will use your technical skills and expertise to improve both technical quality and service efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development of highway designs across all stages of the project life cycle.
  • Be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered to budget, programme, technical standards and legal requirements.
  • Provide guidance and support to a team of experienced and developing technical staff.
  • Contribute to the development of the team’s internal knowledge base, mentoring staff toward professional qualifications.
  • Support Project Managers with planning, programming, technical input to pricing, proposals, deliverables and cost estimation.
  • Check, certify and authorise issue designs, documents, approvals, and reports.
  • Remain active on several multi‑disciplinary project/client accounts simultaneously.
  • Coordinate engineering and technician resources to deliver work packages for clients.
  • Collaborate with clients, key stakeholders and internal teams to deliver schemes/projects.
  • Support projects with site supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.

What We’ll Be Looking For

  • A passion for design and innovative solutions, demonstrating initiative and ingenuity.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent in a highway design role.
  • Working towards IEng or CEng status with a professional institute; professional qualifications are advantageous.
  • Relevant knowledge and experience of highway design and/or drainage systems at various stages of the project life cycle, with specific experience in road geometry, roundabouts, junctions, inclusive active travel, drainage, restraint systems, signage and marking.
  • Knowledge of design codes such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, local authority guidance, and experience preparing contract documentation and technical approvals.
  • The ability to use or direct and check relevant software including Autodesk Civils 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage, and/or PDS.
  • Proactive management of change on tasks/projects, clearly communicating impacts on programme, cost, and quality.
  • Experience complying with Designer Duties under CDM regulations.
