Overview

The Environment Agency are looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and a sound working knowledge of all aspects of running a major investigation. Experience of working alongside Partnership Organisations and of leading, driving and developing both investigative teams and complex investigations would also be desirable.

Everyone starting in a new role will be welcomed into the team and given training and support, including a comprehensive induction and the equipment required for the role. This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of Investigators working to bring the most serious and significant environmental offenders to justice.

Responding to incidents is a central part of our work; duties may include an incident role and being available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available to support you.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate investigations into serious and complex environmental crimes, in collaboration with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room.
  • Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, coordinate evidence gathering and interviews, and prepare case files for prosecution.
  • Drive investigations forward, ensuring timely progression and outcomes, including the potential for prosecution.
  • Work on cases involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud; adapt to varying investigative context.
  • Help develop the investigative team and contribute to team-wide improvements and best practices.

Qualifications and Experience

  • High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written skills; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime and experience leading serious criminal investigations; familiarity with Major Incident Rooms is desirable.
  • Experience in building and developing investigation teams and using initiative to find solutions.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes required within a 6-month probationary period.
  • Full driving licence is required.
