We are looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. You will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and sound knowledge of running major investigations. Experience of working with Partnership Organisations and leading, driving and developing investigative teams and complex investigations is desirable.

You will work with our Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into serious and complex environmental crimes. You will coordinate and oversee all aspects of investigations—from identifying lines of enquiry and reviewing intelligence to raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, through to casefile preparation and prosecution.

Our investigations can involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud. This role offers an exciting opportunity for anyone with relevant investigative experience to work in serious environmental crime.

The role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed team of Investigators working to bring serious environmental offenders to justice. Your skills will help lead, coordinate and progress investigations and develop the team.

Experience / skills Required

  • You should have a high level of attention to detail, be hardworking and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written skills; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, leading serious criminal investigations and workings of a Major Incident Room is desirable.
  • Experience in driving, self-motivation, initiative-taking to find solutions, and building/developing investigation teams is beneficial.
  • Successful completion of both SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes is required within a 6-month probationary period.
  • Full driving licence required.

This is a hybrid role with flexible work from home and an Environment Agency Office. Frequent travel for meetings and operational duties is required. Responding to incidents is a central part of our work; you may be required to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be provided.
