We are delighted to be offering an exciting opportunity for a Senior Forestry Consultant to join the consultancy team at Maydencroft Limited.
We are a close-knit group of Forestry, Ecological, Arboricultural, and Nature Recovery consultants working as an integral part of a larger organisation which includes arborists, foresters, estate managers, landscape operatives and farmers.
We are seeking an ambitious and driven professional to join our expanding Forestry team. This is a unique opportunity to deliver outstanding forestry expertise and services to our established portfolio of high-profile clients and estates across south-east England. The successful candidate will play a key role not only in maintaining our reputation for excellence but also in driving the continued growth and evolution of the business.
This role is ideally suited to individuals who are passionate about Forestry and Nature Recovery, and who can bring complementary skills and experience that will broaden and strengthen our service offering.
Key responsibilities
- Managing an existing portfolio of estates and woodlands throughout Sussex, Surrey and Kent, delivering exceptional service that consistently exceeds client expectations
- Conducting woodland assessments and producing Forestry Commission-approved Woodland Management Plans
- Planning, pricing, organising, and supervising forestry operations, including securing all necessary consents and permissions
- Preparing and managing grant applications, including England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) and Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier schemes
- Carrying out Ancient Woodland Restoration assessments and producing detailed reports
- Overseeing timber harvesting and marketing operations
- Designing and implementing new woodland creation schemes, including UK Forestry Standard (UKFS)-compliant Woodland Creation Design Plans, as well as restocking and maintenance plans.
- Providing forestry support to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Habitat Bank projects, and developing opportunities related to Wood Pasture and Agroforestry.
- Creating and managing woodland maps and spatial data using GIS software for planning, monitoring, and reporting purposes
- Managing and developing a network of subcontractors, ensuring quality and compliance through our structured supplier evaluation process
- Supporting our consultancy division to complete any other relevant documentation as required for organisations such as Forestry Commission, Rural Payments Agency, Environment Agency, Natural England, Woodland Trust.
- Line management and mentoring of junior staff, and supporting future recruitment.
- Leading and contributing to the delivery of wider land management and environmental projects as required.
Core skills and requirements
- A degree in a relevant subject
- Extensive previous forestry experience gained from a similar role
- Experienced in managing projects and contracts
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to use initiative
- Love of the outdoors and the environment, and excellent all-round knowledge of trees, woodlands and habitats
- Understanding of current woodland policy, grant schemes, Industry standards and all relevant legislation
- Excellent IT and Administration skills, including use of GIS
- The ability to develop long-lasting relationships with clients and contractors
- Full, clean UK driving licence
Desirable skills & qualifications
- In depth knowledge of woodland ecology
- Lantra Professional Tree Inspection qualification
- Chartered Forester (or working towards Chartership)
- Masters degree in a relevant subject
Location
We are specifically looking for a consultant based in (or able to relocate to) Sussex, Surrey or Kent.
The workplace
Enjoy the flexibility of a largely remote role, with the opportunity to collaborate in person at our Dorney office (near Windsor) and One Garden City office in Letchworth Garden City when needed
Working hours
08:00 -17:00 Monday to Friday, although with the option to agree different starting and finishing times.
Annual Leave Allowance
22 days + bank holidays, rising by 1 day for each year’s service to a maximum of 27.
