Senior Health and Safety Officer

As a Senior Health & Safety Officer, you'll play a key role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our workforce and the public. You'll lead on inspections, audits, and investigations, provide expert advice to services, and support the development of policies and procedures. You'll also contribute to strategic planning, advise senior leadership, and support continuous improvement initiatives. Mentoring junior staff and supporting their development will also be part of your remit.
A minimum of CertIOSH, or equivalent professional experience in health and safety.
Strong working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and best practice
Proven ability to lead on policy development, inspections, and training in complex or multi-site environments
Effective communication and influencing skills across a range of stakeholders
Ability to travel between sites, with a UK driving licence or suitable mobility support

At Gateshead Council, our Corporate Health & Safety Team plays a vital role in protecting our people and services. Appointed as the Council's competent persons under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, we work closely with staff and managers to manage and reduce workplace risks.
We provide expert advice, carry out inspections and audits, support the development of policies and procedures, investigate incidents, and deliver high-quality training.
