Overview
Senior Health and Safety Manager for a regional civil engineering construction company operating across the South West, Midlands, and parts of the South East. The role reports to the Regional Director and leads a safety function across multiple sites, managing a team of two Health and Safety Managers while maintaining an active on-site presence. The objective is to drive safety culture and ensure full regulatory compliance across all civil engineering projects in the region.
Responsibilities
- Team Leadership – Lead and manage a team of two Health and Safety Managers; allocate workloads and coordinate site coverage across multiple regions; mentor and develop team members; conduct regular team meetings and performance reviews.
- Strategic Safety Leadership – Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures; lead continuous improvement of safety culture; conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments across all sites and operations; provide expert safety guidance to senior management and project teams.
- Operational Safety Management – Maintain regular site presence across the South West, Midlands, and South East; oversee site safety inspections and ensure CDM Regulations 2015 compliance; investigate accidents, incidents and near misses with corrective actions; manage relationships with HSE inspectors and regulatory bodies; coordinate safety training programs for all staff levels; review and approve method statements and risk assessments.
- Compliance and Documentation – Ensure full compliance with health and safety legislation; maintain accurate safety records, statistics and reporting systems; prepare and present safety performance reports to the board; stay current with evolving safety regulations and industry best practices.
Essential Requirements
- Qualifications & Certifications – NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent); IOSH Managing Safely certification; CSCS card (preferably Manager level); Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) or working towards.
- Experience – Minimum 5 years' experience in health and safety management within civil engineering or construction; proven experience managing and leading health and safety teams; track record of managing safety across multiple sites and regions simultaneously; experience with CDM Regulations and Principal Contractor duties; strong background in risk assessment and method statement approval; comfortable with regular travel and site-based work across multiple regions.
- Skills & Attributes – Excellent communication and presentation skills; strong leadership abilities with experience managing safety teams; analytical mindset with attention to detail; full UK driving licence essential.
Desirable Requirements
- Qualifications – Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field.
- Experience – Experience with major infrastructure or highway projects.
- Certifications – CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS).
- Software – Experience with safety management software systems.
