As our Senior Industry Applications Scientist, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home.This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.
Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work part time and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share . Your world of expertise
You will join our team of scientists and scientific consultants within Industry Consultancy to make a meaningful contribution to critical activities that help our industry customers to operate more safely and efficiently, increase their resilience to future climate change, and better plan their path towards net zero. You will develop your skills and expertise to benefit projects, including: gaining a greater understanding of industry challenges in sectors such as energy and water; growing your relevant scientific and technical capabilities to utilise and develop new ideas, concepts and methods to scope, lead and deliver projects . As a senior scientist/consultant you will provide support and advice to the team collaboratively with the broader organisation and academia, to ensure the latest pioneering science is being developed and employed to the benefit of our users.You'll work closely with our business colleagues and building on your relationship management skills work in collaboration with our customers to understand their needs and contribute to business development activities .

- Involvement at all stages of projects, efficiently working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to successfully plan and deliver a range of scientific consultancy projects including sometimes leading from inception to delivery and scoping future work in support of the development of proposals for new consultancy .
- Developing and maintaining a good working knowledge of latest Met Office capabilities, weather and climate science and analytical methods to utilise the right data and relating these to customer needs to develop and deliver solutions that provide benefit to users.
- Designing and developing high quality scientific computing code to undertake the required data analysis using appropriate quality assurance tools and processes.
- Communicating science clearly and effectively to customers and peers and contributing to the development of the team through sharing and advising .
- Engaging with customers throughout projects to ensure the work is meeting their needs addressing their challenges and delivering against government priorities with a focus on retaining customers and growing consultancy.

As our Senior Industry Applications Scientist, your total reward package will be up to £58,419 annually, which includes:
- An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
- Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
Essential Criteria, skills and experience:
- Substantial experience and knowledge in a physical science or quantitative scientific discipline with experience working post-graduate in applied research and/or as a scientific consultant.
- Demonstrable experience of using scientific/technical insight intheapplication of scientific and analyticalmethodsto numeric data, including exploring and developing new concepts/methods, to solve applied research problems under your own initiative.
- Strongscientific computing skills(e.g.Python) with experience of writing and modifying complex code to produce high quality analyses using appropriate quality assurance tools and processes.
- Evidence of developing valuable relationships and building credibility with customers, stakeholders, collaborators or colleagues, including drawing out their needs, understanding their environmental challenges and determining how your work can benefit their activities .
- Excellent communication skills (written, oral, presentation and listening) with the ability to clearly communicate complex scientific and technical information to a range of audiences, focusing on addressing their needs.
- Demonstrable ability to work as an effective and productive team member, collaborating to deliver scientific/technical projects, including leading or providing support and scientific technical advice to colleagues.
