Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Overview

The Networks and Hosting Team, which sits within Tech and Data, is responsible for maintaining existing infrastructure that underpins the majority of our services across TfL. You will work on large scale network improvement projects such as network security (firewall) upgrades, network consolidation and integration, and widescale refreshes including WAN and data centre networks.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the operability of TfL\'s information technology networks, including incident investigation and resolution to maximise system availability for critical business services in line with agreed service levels.
  • Own and assure operational network activities, including change, requests and network design architectures, ensuring implementations are fit for purpose and adhere to approved designs.
  • Provide guidance and mentor the Network team in BAU services, project work, and continual improvements to processes and service.
  • Lead accurate and timely reporting on the state of the technical environment using monitoring tools; ensure all HW, SW and service configuration elements are recorded correctly.
  • Manage capacity and identify actions to mitigate risks in the network environment.
  • Identify and drive service and process improvements with a focus on standardisation and automation to reduce manual effort; provide recommendations for innovative solutions.
  • Collaborate with other technology teams to deliver project outcomes; provide SME input and contribute to design processes as required.
  • Identify technical dependencies, risks and issues to maintain vendor, statutory and TfL compliance levels.
  • Forecast activity trends and implement improvements to maintain up-to-date, stable and secure technologies.
  • Supplier management: manage supplier adherence to SLAs, work with vendors to minimise service disruption and ensure value is realised.
  • Ensure network activities meet TfL policies and standards, and best practices; manage Capex spend in line with business priorities.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry developments in network and network security technologies; provide technical leadership and support junior engineers.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications

  • Essential: Demonstrable high-level knowledge of networking technologies, including firewalls, switching (VLANs, trunks, STP, vPC, VDC, VXLAN), routing (EIGRP/OSPF/iBGP/eBGP) and router redundancy (HSRP/VRRP/GLBP); QoS in LAN/WAN; strong troubleshooting; experience with Cisco and major firewall vendors; ability to manage devices via CLI; data analysis to identify trends; effective communication; risk identification and mitigation planning; experience leading a technical team; fluency in English; degree in a relevant subject or 5+ years of experience; ITIL knowledge.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of network security products (proxy servers, application delivery controllers), load balancers; SDN, cloud networking, Wi-Fi; network automation (e.g., Python); experience with other major networking vendors; knowledge of relevant government/public sector legislation (Data Protection Act, EU Procurement Directives, Freedom of Information Act); awareness of agile methodologies (Scrum).
