NEC Digital Studio is a people‑first digital studio focused on inclusive design and accessible, sustainable solutions. We work with central and local government, the NHS, charity and private sector organisations, often embedding with client teams to deliver user‑centred services. Our teams practice participatory co‑design and ethical research, with strong emphasis on accessibility and digital inclusion.
Location: Ideally near Glasgow or London for hybrid working; role can also be remote if you are not local to an NEC office.
Job Description
What we’re looking for:
We’re seeking a skilled practitioner with significant experience in delivering end‑to‑end, evidence‑based designs for services and products that are inclusive, accessible and planet‑friendly. You’ll work with multidisciplinary teams on complex projects where autonomy and project management are important. You will champion our values: care, fluency in people, craftsmanship, openness to change, collaboration and mutual respect. You will also champion our user‑centred design (UCD) approach, as we work with a broad range of clients some of whom are new to UCD.
The role may also involve:
- Leading and directing projects – guiding multidisciplinary teams and clients toward inclusive, accessible, planet‑friendly services.
- Team support and management – inspiring and line‑managing team members, overseeing appraisals and professional development.
- Defining and refining practice – shaping how disciplines work together and progressing inclusive, sustainable design at NEC Digital Studio.
- Supporting new business – spotting opportunities, contributing to proposals and pitches.
Your skills and experience:
We welcome applicants with experience in any of the following areas:
- Research – collaboration with user researchers and service designers to create designs based on research; facilitating user research and usability testing is desirable.
- User‑centred journeys & experiences – selecting approaches that deliver user‑outcomes aligned with feasibility and client vision.
- Facilitation – leading design workshops and design sprints with teams, stakeholders and users.
- Verbal communication – explaining complex problems and design decisions to non‑design stakeholders, articulating risks and tradeoffs.
- Visual communication – leading clear, compelling visuals, including drawing or graphic communication.
- Written communication – guiding teams on clear, concise writing and documentation.
- Accessibility awareness – strong understanding of accessibility standards and applying best practices across projects.
- Design to development – fostering smooth handoffs between design and development teams.
- Stakeholder management – negotiating with clients to achieve positive outcomes within budget.
- Proactive and autonomous – leading conversations and adding value independently.
- Iterative design – refining solutions through feedback and testing to meet user needs and business goals.
- Evidence‑Based Design – grounding decisions in user research findings and insights to reduce risk and improve usability.
- GDS knowledge – familiarity with Government Digital Service delivery, design system, principles and service standard.
How we work:
We work with central and local government, the NHS, charity and private sector organisations. Our NEC Software Solutions colleagues span sectors including Public Safety and Justice. We may embed with client teams for projects and aim to rotate across sectors after 3–12 months to broaden experience, including applying GDS standards and improving customer buy‑in. NEC Digital Studio also runs weekly meet‑ups for sharing work and learning methods. Collaboration with other digital teams (service design, content design, developers, and user researchers) is common. All Interaction Designers are supported by senior members of the Product Design team who help with wellbeing, goal setting and growth feedback.
Qualifications
We welcome applicants from all professional backgrounds. A degree or professional experience relevant to interaction design is required; we value varied expertise within the team.
Additional Information
We offer an excellent benefits package, including a generous pension and private medical cover. Benefits include 25 days holiday (plus buy/sell option), life assurance, a pension plan with up to 8.5% employer contributions, flexible benefits, and LinkedIn Learning access with 15,000+ courses.
Other information
- Candidates must have pre‑existing right to work and travel in the UK; documentary evidence will be required.
- Offers are subject to vetting, references and occupational health checks.
- DBS checks may be required depending on role.
