Overview

The Environment Agency is seeking a qualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent to join the Water Industry Enforcement Team within Legal and Audit Services. The role involves criminal proceedings and advising on enforcement of environmental requirements, as well as the imposition of civil sanctions such as enforcement undertakings and variable monetary penalties. The post includes providing training on disclosure requirements and the use of statutory and enforcement powers, and contributing to improving the performance of the Water Industry. The role supports flexible working patterns including job share; please include any information about preferred working arrangements on your application.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct criminal proceedings and advise on enforcement of environmental requirements.
  • Advise on the imposition of civil sanctions such as enforcement undertakings and variable monetary penalties.
  • Provide training to staff on disclosure requirements and the use of various statutory and enforcement powers.
  • Own an interesting caseload and contribute to supporting the Water Industry performance improvement.
  • Travel to court and other locations as required; role can be based at any main hub location with home working subject to business needs.

Experience and qualifications

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or equivalent (FILEX with rights of audience in criminal proceedings).
  • Ideally experience as a prosecutor or defence lawyer of complex criminal cases concerning breaches of environmental legislation or other complex criminal and regulatory law.
  • Sound knowledge of criminal law, practice and procedure; trial experience in the Magistrates’ Court; experience preparing complex cases for trial and sentence in the Crown Court.
  • You may be a higher rights advocate, but this is not a requirement.
  • Understanding of the Environment Agency’s use of civil sanctions in place of criminal proceedings and the ability to advise on the appropriate regulatory response to environmental offending.

Conditions and contact

This role includes a Market Forces Factor allowance of £5,250 per annum. Interviews are planned for October 2025. The role combines home working with attendance at an office base, and can be based at any main hub location with travel to court and other locations as required.
