What you’ll do
Marine vessels represent some of the most complex manufactured assets and you will lead the development and delivery of the Marine Engineering aspects of projects. Projects will range from supporting customers in procuring and designing new ships to delivering complex in-service changes for both commercial and naval vessels, including feasibility studies, technical investigations and analyses. You may expect to undertake:
- System design and equipment selection development and integration using 2D and 3D modelling;
- Surveys to support design changes and investigations;
- Engineering investigations to resolve in-service defects and safety issues;
- Project Management of engineering tasks and projects;
- Engaging with the wider industry;
You will influence designs and team processes to improve designs, build quality and efficiency. Day-to-day work will include design of mechanical systems and arrangements with supporting calculations, reviewing production engineering 3D models, inter-departmental communication and liaising with suppliers, partners and clients to develop design solutions. You will also contribute to the delivery of projects across our wider portfolio, including submarines and a range of broader consulting projects within our other market areas. Research and development is also a focus, including the development of future ship design concepts and new capabilities, tools and processes.
This role is based out of our Fareham office with hybrid working considered. Travel to other BMT offices and customer sites will be necessary as required (occasional overseas travel may be required).
About you
Candidates will have an HNC/HND and/or a Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Marine Engineering. Ideally you will be professionally qualified (Chartered Engineer or Incorporated) or on the path for registration. You will be commercially aware, producing clear and well-presented drawings and calculations. A high degree of initiative and autonomy is essential to meet targets and deadlines. You will have good interpersonal skills and experience communicating to stakeholders via meetings, reports and presentations.
The following skills are considered essential:
- Minimum of three years relevant design experience in the marine commercial industry for vessels in the range 15 - 70m+.
- Understanding of the integration of ship systems and equipment within ships or marine platforms;
- Ability to produce mechanical ship system schematics (in AutoCAD), ship and technical specifications, vessel arrangements; experience with construction materials and techniques, design for buildability and weight reduction; experience with multiple classification/code regulations;
- Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D, ideally 3D CAD software, and Microsoft programs;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with experience leading technical projects to time, cost and quality.
The following skills are desirable:
- Defence domain experience;
- Ability to coach and mentor less experienced staff;
- Ability to receive and give feedback;
- Flexibility to be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites;
- Experience with PLM software or document management processes.
