Senior Optical System Engineer Opto-electronic Systems · London Office ·

New Today

We are looking for a Senior Optical System Engineer with passion and experience in experiments, prototyping and testing. You\'ll work on optical system and network systems using automated measurements, as well as modelling while interfacing with other teams towards product development. You will work iteratively through a series of prototypes to deliver a production-grade solution.

Responsibilities

  • Join the Optical Network Integration team and collaborate closely with other teams.
  • Assess optical transmission and network performance for short-reach AI Networked Systems.
  • Develop and execute test plans for high speed optical transceivers across the full product lifecycle (prototype, validation, production).
  • Perform electrical and optical characterisation of transceivers, specifically in burst-mode Tx/Rx testing.
  • Optimise receiver performance through equalisation tuning (CTLE, DFE, FFE) and characterise link margins.
  • Analyse test data to identify performance margins, failure modes, and opportunities for design/manufacturing improvements.
  • Development automated test systems for testing, calibration, characterisation and production.
  • Prepare clear and concise test reports for internal teams and customers.
  • Collaborate with other internal teams, PIC design, Integration, Systems and Networks and PLM to resolve performance issues.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong hands-on experience in optical communication systems development and testing, ideally at 100Gbps and above.
  • Experience with OLT/ONT PON system testing and integration. Expertise in burst-mode transceiver characterisation.
  • Solid understanding of equalisation techniques (CTLE, FFE, DFE) for improving high-speed link performance.
  • Proficiency in using high-speed measurement instruments (e.g., sampling oscilloscopes, BERTs, burst-mode analysers).
  • Familiarity with optical components (lasers, photodiodes, burst-mode APDs/TIAs, modulators) and transceiver architectures.
  • Experience with automated test systems and scripting (e.g., Python, C++, C#).
  • Understanding of signal integrity, high-speed PCB design considerations, and packaging impacts on performance.
  • A humble attitude and good communication skills.
  • Ability to create an understanding of complex ideas, concepts and designs to a variety of audiences from multiple backgrounds.
  • MS or PhD degree in optical communications, physics, or other relevant fields or experience within the industry.
