About The Role

Balfour Beatty is hiring a Senior Planning Engineer to join our dynamic Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) business unit. This is a key role in delivering complex substation projects that are critical to the UK’s energy transition and infrastructure resilience.

Location: Primarily based at our Bramford site near Ipswich, where we’re working on a major substation project. There is also flexibility to work from our Derby hub with travel.

As a Senior Planning Engineer, you’ll lead the development and management of high-impact construction programmes. Your role will bring:

  • Strategic planning and programme oversight
  • Advanced scheduling and risk analysis expertise
  • Mentorship and support to our planning team
  • Full lifecycle involvement—from early design through to commissioning

What you'll be doing

  • Programme Development: Ensure all planning content complies with internal procedures and guidance.
  • Scope & Constraints Analysis: Identify planning scope, major constraints, and contract requirements.
  • Tender Planning: Lead the creation of strategic, optimised tender programmes and methodologies to support winning bids.
  • Contract Programme Management: Produce, manage, and maintain contract programmes in collaboration with Planning/Project Leads.
  • Critical Path & Change Control: Analyse and communicate critical paths, maintain baselines, and manage change control processes.
  • Resource Planning: Optimise labour, equipment, and material usage to meet project goals and control costs.
  • Contract Oversight: Manage subcontractor and supplier contracts, monitor performance, and resolve issues.
  • Mentorship & Leadership: Provide strategic planning oversight and mentor junior planners to foster a collaborative, high-performing team.
  • Data & KPI Reporting: Support the planning team in producing data and KPIs to track progress and inform decision-making.

Who we're looking for

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Leadership and conflict resolution capabilities
  • Proficient in managing data and planning processes

Knowledge

  • Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6, Asta Powerproject, MS Project, and Excel
  • Deep understanding of construction project management principles
  • Expertise in NEC contracts, TRA, QSRA, and risk management methodologies
  • Familiarity with tender and contract documentation

Experience

  • Proven track record in planning and delivering complex construction programmes
  • Experience leading planning efforts and mentoring teams
  • Strong stakeholder management, including clients and subcontractors
