Job Title: Senior Planning Policy Officer

Pay rate: £19.32 per hour PAYE

Role length: Anticipated 6 - 7 months

Working arrangements: Hybrid working will be considered

Additional requirement: Full valid Driving Licence

The role: We are seeking an experienced Senior Planning Policy Officer to carry out statutory plan making, preparation of supplementary planning guidance, and initiatives to help improve the borough.

Key responsibilities

  • Contributing to the development of statutory planning policies, borough-wide studies, supplementary guidance, development frameworks, and action plans — including managing project timelines, coordinating consultation strategies, and preparing draft documents and reports
  • Preparing policy impact reports in response to proposals from other planning authorities and public agencies
  • Providing clear planning policy advice to Development Control teams and other departments, ensuring effective cross-departmental coordination
  • Monitoring and evaluating planning policies and proposals in line with council or government requirements
  • Supporting conservation initiatives and environmental improvements across the borough in line with council priorities
  • Identifying and securing external funding opportunities from UK Government, EU, and other sources to benefit the borough
  • Representing the authority at public meetings, consultations, exhibitions, and inter-agency forums, including attending on behalf of senior officers
  • Assisting with local studies and planning projects under the direction of the Forward Planning Manager
  • Drafting reports and planning documents essential to the delivery of Forward Planning responsibilities
  • Ensuring statutory consultations and grant applications are compliant, financially viable, and aligned with policies and procedures

What the client is looking for

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Planning or a related area
  • Membership of the MRTPI or equivalent professional qualification including working towards membership
  • Experience and knowledge of successful Development Plan preparation in a Local Planning Authority
  • Awareness of the changing planning policy background, together with the sustainability agenda
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally
  • Ability to work with a variety of IT software packages
  • Good negotiation skills
  • An understanding of project management
  • Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and helpful manner and able to deal with stressful situations
