Overview

Senior / Principal Transport Planner role at WSP in London. The role focuses on shaping transport strategies and technical studies for public and private sector clients, with emphasis on sustainability, innovation and collaboration.

What you’ll do

  • Work as part of a team in a large, multi-disciplinary office with access to broad expertise.
  • Be present in the office to help develop and coach junior staff; typically 2-3 days per week in-office.
  • Manage a broad range of transport planning projects, including project team management, collaboration, budgeting, programming and technical excellence.
  • Contribute to the four pillars (People; Clients & Growth; Operations; Technical Excellence) and support Pillar Leads.
  • Support the growth of the Mobility team in London by liaising with clients, reviewing briefs and tenders, and contributing to fee proposals and bids.
  • Lead on technical work including preparing transport strategies and studies, especially for active travel.
  • Collaborate with Future Mobility, Digital and Net Zero teams on initiatives (Mobility Hubs, EV strategies, First Mile/Last Mile studies).
  • Attend and present at internal and external technical knowledge sharing events.
  • Delegate and supervise Graduates, Assistants and Transport Planners, coaching them to acquire new skills.
  • Work towards professional accreditation / chartership with in-house mentoring.

What we will look for you to demonstrate

  • Experience in active travel, public transport, feasibility studies, scheme development, transport strategies and appraisals, and project management.
  • Ability to work at both strategic and detailed levels.
  • Knowledge of relevant transport policies and regulations (e.g., London Mayor’s Transport Strategy, Active Travel England’s Design Guidance, Local Transport Note 1/20, Manual for Streets) and UK planning processes.
  • Ability to produce technical and non-technical public reports and presentations to a high technical standard.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with clients, stakeholders, team members and in meetings/workshops/public forums.
  • Project management experience including reviewing briefs and tenders, developing fee proposals, leading project delivery, supervising workloads and managing client expectations.
  • Sound commercial awareness and financial management.
