Overview: This position is a significant leadership role with full accountability to business partner Property, Construction and Planning, providing legal strategic advice and overseeing delivery of property contracts (circa 200 instructions in 2024). The role involves complex and bespoke arrangements relating to sale and leasebacks, mixed use developments and convenience leases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accountability for end‑to‑end legal advice for Property, Construction and Planning (including litigation)
  • Advising on structuring arrangements with third parties
  • Overseeing negotiation and drafting of legal documentation to support those arrangements
  • Managing a complex mixed estate and a tenanted portfolio including charged and leaseback properties
  • Advising on regulatory and competition elements of a large grocery retail estate
  • Driving continuous improvement and best‑in‑class contract advice across Property, Planning, and Construction
  • Maintaining MI and a single version of the truth for Property, Planning and Construction contracts repository
  • Managing internal and external legal teams
  • Driving transparency and focus on key issues to enable business delivery at pace
  • Supporting corporate governance for all Property, Planning and Construction contracts
  • Attending Asda Real Estate and Investment Committee meetings and VP/SD led steering groups on specific projects
  • Developing and implementing workforce strategy: diagnosing capability gaps, recruiting, selecting, developing talent, supporting mentorship, workforce development and succession planning
  • Partnering with Vice Presidents, Senior Directors and suppliers in Property, Planning and Construction
