Overview Senior R&D Engineer – Continuity Care New Product Development Team at Convatec. The role drives design, development, testing and launch of continence care medical devices from concept through to manufacturing and market launch. Key Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of medical devices from concept to launch. Collaborate with multifunctional teams to resolve technical and scientific challenges for new product development. Generate new intellectual property and evaluate the IP landscape. Develop new concepts via 3D models and assemblies in SolidWorks. Partner with process development to develop robust designs suitable for manufacturing processes including plastic injection moulding and thermoforming. Focus on usability and user‑centric design. Prototype and conduct rapid simulation techniques to validate concepts. Plan and execute testing of prototypes and analyse experimental data. Communicate technical conclusions and recommendations to the wider team. Provide technical input to support the design control process, including design history file documentation and material specifications. Lead design for manufacturing and design for assembly discussions. Maintain expertise by keeping updated on engineering advancements through publications, patents, university industrial contacts and vendor discussions. Engage with key stakeholders to manage expectations and deliver commitments. Work collaboratively across the organisation and support colleagues to achieve shared goals. Model behaviours appropriate to Convatec values and maintain compliance with HSE regulations and QMS.
Essential Skills & Experience
4+ years of experience in industrial engineering with mechanical / design engineering background. Experience designing and developing plastic moulded components. Experience with injection moulding validation activities (FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ, PQ). Proficiency in SolidWorks. Understanding of ISO 13485 and 14971, and FDA regulations for design controls. Demonstrated ability to work on multiple teams and projects simultaneously. Effective verbal and written communication in English.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an R&D medical devices environment and design control.
Education
Degree in mechanical or design engineering or equivalent.
Travel & Working Conditions
Position may involve travel up to 25% of the time, mainly within Europe. Role will be based at Convatec Technology Centre in Deeside in 2026, moving to Manchester in 2027 with hybrid working (2–3 days on site).
