Position Summary:

The Senior Property and Casualty Underwriter is responsible for overseeing and managing property and casualty business workflows, providing technical expertise and ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines. The role develops strategies for new business opportunities and portfolio retention and actively contributes to achieving business targets. They cultivate long-term broker relationships, while also supporting training for new staff in underwriting processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwriting & Risk Management
    • Underwrite complex renewable energy risks across wind, solar, battery storage, and emerging technologies.
    • Structure bespoke insurance solutions for construction and operational phases, including Marine, CAR, DSU, PD, BI, and liability.
    • Ensure underwriting decisions align with risk appetite, regulatory requirements, and profitability targets.
  • People Leadership & Development
    • Provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to underwriters and assistants.
    • Design and deliver structured training programs to build technical capability across the team.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews, support career development, and foster a collaborative team environment.
    • Act as a subject matter expert and escalation point for complex underwriting queries.
  • Governance & Controls
    • Ensure underwriting guidance, frameworks, and controls are clearly defined, implemented, and adhered to across the team.
    • Monitor compliance with internal underwriting standards, binder rules and external regulatory requirements.
    • Lead periodic reviews of underwriting practices and contribute to audit readiness and risk governance.
  • Market Engagement & Strategy
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and industry stakeholders.
    • Represent the company in client meetings, market forums, and industry events.
    • Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to inform underwriting strategy and product development.
  • Operational Excellence
    • Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting guidelines, tools, and processes.
    • Collaborate with claims, actuarial, legal, and risk engineering teams to ensure holistic risk management.
    • Support portfolio analysis, reporting, and business planning activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of underwriting experience, with the majority in renewable energy or power generation.
  • Proven experience in leading teams, mentoring underwriters, and delivering training.
  • Strong technical knowledge of renewable energy technologies and project lifecycle risks.
  • Familiarity with International markets, including Lloyd’s and company markets.
  • Prepared to travel
  • Professional qualifications (e.g., ACII, CPCU) preferred.
  • Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Finance, or related field is advantageous.
